Duncan Hospital - EHA

Duncan Hospital - EHA Duncan Hospital caters to the health needs of Northern Bihar and neighboring Nepal. The Hospital was started by Dr. H. Cecil Duncan in 1930, and later set Drs.

The Duncan Hospital, named after its founder missionary Dr. Cecil
Duncan, a Scottish Surgeon, was strategically located to serve both
the populations of Nepal & Northern Bihar (India). Initially, it was a clinic run by Dr. Duncan but it soon developed into a 30 bedded
hospital in the year 1930. To the North lay the mountainous land of
Nepal, a land whose doors were closed for a long time to the me

ssage of Jesus Christ. To the east, west and south stretched the great plains of Bihar, one of the most densely populated and disadvantaged areas of India. Over the years owing to the Grace of God this 30 bedded hospital developed to a 175 bedded affiliated with the Regions Beyond Missionary Union (RBMU, UK). Progressively widening its range of treatment and specialties, it admirably blended between the two diverse and challenging cultures. In 1941 Dr. Duncan left the hospital on being conscripted to the Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. Unfortunately was unable to return to serve the people he loved and in the year 1984 God called Him home. For seven years from 1941the hospital remained closed, due to lack of medical personnel. But in 1947 a new chapter opened with the arrival of an Irish couple: Dr. Trevor Strong and his wife Dr. Patricia Strong. The hospital soon regained momentum, its services diversified and infrastructure expanded. They were closely followed by the arrival of Dr. Keith and Mrs. Marion Sanders. Dr. Sanders became widely acknowledged for his novel management of tetanus and gained much acclaim in the medical world. Matthew and Joanna Peacock from UK also made valuable contributions during their services from 1964 to 1974. In the year 1965 Ms. Irene Stephenson, then Nursing Superintendent set up the Nursing School and laid down the principles and standards that continue to be practiced by the school even today. Miss Ruth Horne responded to the need of an Administrator to put administrative systems into places and joined in the year 1936. Since the hospital re-opened in 1948, Miss Amy Mc Burney was responsible for the outreach work since then. On 3rd March 1974, the RBMU handed over the management of the hospital to The Emmanuel Hospital Association under which it continues to function. Since then, the hospital has continued in its path of service and growth a testimony to His enduring grace and faithfulness. From the very small beginnings, many have played a part in building up the Duncan. Following their God given Vision these men and women of God helped improve the standards in every department while continuing to witness for our Lord Jesus Christ. We pay our tributes to all those who were faithful and committed until the end!

A welcome program was organized on 19th August 2022 for the new staff members joined Duncan hospital between April 2022 and August 2022. It was a time to know our people who have become a part of Duncan family. We were reminded of the calling and purpose of our officers working with us. The big picture of Duncan’s existence under the umbrella of Emmanuel Hospital Association and the story of Emmanuel Hospital Association was presented during the program. We are sure that all of us went home encouraged to continue to work in Duncan and across EHA with this assurance from the Bible “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6

On behalf of Emmanuel Hospital Association, the Duncan hospital Management welcome new staff members. We wish and pray that we continue to work and grow together and reap the harvest in due time.

On 15th July 2022, the Duncan Hospital bid adieu to two of its dedicated and valuable staff members - Mrs. Bahamani Jaria and Ms. Olem Dularui Tete.
Mrs. Bahamani joined Lab Department on 1st January 1999. During her tenure of 23 years, she exhibited the quality of a good Christian worker such as mercy, grace and humility. She went extra mile by working past her standard working hours. At 5:30 pm the general shift staff of the hospital wind - up their work but she would always work beyond 5:30 in the evening to make sure that all patients have under gone investigation and the report is delivered to everyone. She would make an effort to check that no patient is left out for investigation because she would understand the struggle of a patient coming from far away and their overnight stay in the hospital due to delay in their investigation. She was compassionate towards all patients, her colleagues and junior staff. She was a prayer warrior amidst the Christian prayer group at campus.
We also had privilege to be served by Ms. Olem at General Mess. She joined as a Nurse Aid on 1st July 1982. 40 years is a span of one generation and Ms. Olem has made it through!! With all ups and downs, with all trials and sickness and good days too - Ms. Olem has completed 40 years of her service at Duncan. Not a single day went, when we saw her sitting and relaxing but she would just work tirelessly for so many years. Many of us in Duncan may not be of the age equivalent to Ms. Olem’s years of service and this is what inspires us – to be faithful in whatever God gives and wherever He places us.
As we celebrate the service of Mrs. Bahamani and Ms. Olem, we are reminded of the fact that –

It’s not what we do but how we do matters.
Its not how well we begin but how well we finish!

Thank you Mrs. Bahamani and Ms. Olem. May the good Lord bless you and your clan and tribe!
