The third of Patanjali’s Niyamas is ‘Tapas’, which often translates traditionally as ‘austerity’ or ‘discipline’. The word Tapas is derived from the root Sanskrit verb ‘tap’ which means ‘to burn’, and evokes a sense of ‘fiery discipline’ or ‘passion’. In this sense, Tapas can mean cultivating a sense of self-discipline, passion and courage in order to burn away ‘impurities’ physically, mentally and emotionally, and paving the way to our true greatness.

Tapas doesn’t have to mean being solemn and serious though, this fieriness is what gets our heart pumping, heightens our desire for personal growth and reminds us of how much we love our yoga practice! Just as with all aspects of the Sutras though, Tapas has relevance both on and off the yoga mat.

What is Devotion?” I thought “devotion” was self-explanatory. But, every time I mentioned “devotion” there was either silence or questions.

I now recognize that there is a linguistic barrier here. I still want to believe that many people experience devotional feelings but they don’t necessarily call them “devotion.”

Feelings are experiential by definition. We can’t define them but we make attempts to describe them. Literary writing is all about the description of feelings I suppose. Devotion is experiential. There is no academic definition of it.

Among the intellectuals “devotion” is a foreign concept. Intellectuals rarely talk about devotion. Among the religious fundamentalists devotion is a misunderstood word. Fundamentalists emphasize the fear of God. Devotion has nothing to do with fear. It has nothing to do with guilt either.

You know that I have no problem saying God. It is so sad that in modern times intellectuals hesitate to say God because of the overuse and abuse of the word by the organized religions. It is true that when we name the Cosmic Consciousness we limit it but we have to use a word to refer to the ultimate reality, the ocean. The important point here is that the infinite ocean is full of Consciousness. The infinite ocean is full of Love.

Since Consciousness and Love are synonymous, this infinite ocean of love is Absolute Consciousness. Our souls are mysterious internal reflections of the Absolute Consciousness.

Devotion is longing, intense longing for the Beloved. In a different essay I said, remember the feeling of falling in love. Once the remembrance is established, it triggers a higher devotional sentiment.

Devotion is like falling in love. When you are in love you are constantly longing to see the beloved. In devotion there is a sweet pain of separation.

Devotion is the love of God. Those who spread the fear of God to control people will never understand devotion.

Yes, yog does make a sense of union or communion.
It is the true union of our will with the will of god, it means the disciplining of the intellect, the mind, the emotions, the will, which that yoga presupposes:,
This the real meaning of yoga , a deliverance from contact with pain and sorrow.

31/12/2020

The yamas and niyamas are the first two limbs of the eight-limbed path, which is a step-by-step path towards the realization of yoga, as described in the 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali'. They are the most concrete places to start, as they relate directly to how you behave outwardly in the world and inwardly toward yourself.

The Yamas and Niyamas are often seen as 'moral codes', or ways of 'right living'. They really form the foundation of our whole practice, and honouring these ethics as we progress along 'the path' means we're always being mindful of each action, and therefore cultivating a more present and aware state of being.

Yama means restraint, or what you are not supposed to do. Niyama means what you are supposed to observe or follow. They are like do’s and don’ts of the Yoga System. The yamas are meant to restrain the negative behavior and impulses, and the niyamas to enhance the virtues or positive qualities and traits. Both are meant to transform the initiate (sadhaka) and prepare him or her for self-realization of liberation.

Patanjali identified five yamas and five niyamas in the second part of the Yoga Sutras. He not only listed them but also explained their importance and the way to practice them, counteracting the negative thoughts (vitarkas) that stand in the way of their practice. Whenever one is assailed by negative thoughts due to greed, delusion, anger or any other internal or external cause, he suggested that one should counter them with the help of yamas and niyamas, remembering that such negative thought only intensify suffering, ignorance and bo***ge.

The five yamas are non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya) and non-possession (aparigraha).

The five niyamas are cleanliness (saucha), cheerfulness (santosa), austerity (tapah), self-study (svadhyaya) and devotional attitude (Isvara paridhana).
