In ancient Chinese philosophy, the words Yin and Yang were used to describe the two sides of a mountain.

The shadow side of the mountain was called Yin : cool, dark, quiet, and inward.
The sunny side was called Yang : warm, bright, active, and outward.

Neither side is better than the other.
Both exist together and continuously change throughout the day.

This simple observation of nature became one of the most profound philosophies behind Yin Yoga.
