पुराणों में यह बताया गया है कि गौ के शरीर में 33 कोटि देवता निवास करते हैं । कहा जाता है कि जब गाय के प्रत्येक अंग में देवता प्रतिष्ठित हो गये और अकेली लक्ष्मी जी को देर से आने के कारण स्थान न मिला तो वे बङी परेशान हुई । अन्त में उन्हें गोबर में स्थान दिया गया । लक्ष्मी जी ने सहर्ष गोबर को ही अपना निवास बना लिया । इसलिए ही कहा गया है--" गंग रमे गोमुत्र में, लक्ष्मी गोबर माहि । गोमाता तज के सब तीर्थन में भटकत काहि ।।
