Bringing a newborn home is a journey of joy, but I know how quickly that joy can turn into anxiety when you notice a yellow tint in your baby’s eyes or skin. At Narayan Hospital and Trauma Centre, I see many concerned parents daily, and today, I want to clear the air about Newborn Jaundice.
The Reality 💡
Jaundice occurs because a baby’s developing liver can’t always remove bilirubin from the blood fast enough. In most cases, it is a normal physiological process that resolves on its own. However, the "reality" is that we must monitor the levels closely to ensure they don't reach a point that could harm the baby’s developing brain.
The Myths vs. The Facts 🚫✅
• Myth: "Keep the baby in direct sunlight to cure it."
• Reality: While light helps, direct midday sunlight can cause sunburn or dehydration in newborns. In the hospital, we use specialized Phototherapy (blue-light) which is a controlled and safe medical treatment.
• Myth: "The mother’s diet caused this."
• Reality: Jaundice is rarely related to what the mother eats. It’s about the baby’s internal systems maturing.
• Myth: "If the baby looks yellow, just wait it out."
• Reality: High bilirubin levels require medical intervention. If your baby is lethargic, not feeding well, or the yellowness is spreading to the legs, it’s time for a check-up immediately.
My Advice to Parents in Rudrapur 📍
Don't rely on "home remedies" for a newborn's health. If you notice your little one turning yellow, the safest step is a quick blood test or a non-invasive screening.
