😀In space, gravity doesn’t work the same way as it does on Earth. This means astronauts can’t spit after brushing their teeth because liquids don’t fall down—they float around. Spitting toothpaste into a sink would cause it to drift into the air, which could make a mess and even damage equipment or be inhaled.
To solve this, astronauts use a small amount of special toothpaste that is safe to swallow. After brushing, they either swallow the toothpaste along with a sip of water or wipe it away with a towel. This keeps their mouth clean without needing to rinse or spit.
This routine might seem unusual, but it’s a practical solution to keep good oral hygiene in microgravity. Dental care is just as important in space as it is on Earth—especially on long missions where dental emergencies can be hard to manage.
