AIIMS Jammu Performs First Image-Guided Non Vascular Intervention

In a significant advancement in medical procedures, the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vijaypur, Jammu, has successfully conducted its First Image-Guided Non Vascular Intervention. This groundbreaking procedure marks a milestone in the hospital's commitment to enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient care. This is just the beginning of quality patient care, and under the noble leadership and support of Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS, Jammu, many advancements are at their germination stage, which in the near future will evolve as a revolution of the high level of quality care at AIIMS, Vijaypur, Jammu.
The procedure was carried out on a 44-year-old patient in the Department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging. The patient presented with Left buccal and Submandibular swelling who was referred from the department of OMFS. Patient underwent USG guided core needle Biopsy of suspiscious Left Level Ib cervical lymph node in the Non-Vascular Intervention Radiology lab extracting tissue samples with minimal discomfort to the patient.
The ultrasound-guided lymph node biopsy was performed by a skilled team of Radiologists led by Dr. Ankit Prabhakar, Assistant Professor Radiodiagnosis with faculty members including Dr Gita Devi & Dr Khanak Nandolia, Senior Residents including Dr Avinash, Dr Priyanka, Dr Ajay and Nursing Officer Ms Deepika. This minimally invasive technique allows for real-time imaging of target sites, enabling precise targeting for biopsy. It is particularly beneficial in diagnosing various conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers.
Glad to inform that Non Vascular Intervention Radiology Services are now available at AIIMS Jammu. Ultrasound guidance significantly reduces the risk of complications and enhances the accuracy of the biopsy, which is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment plan.
Patients undergoing these minimally invasive procedures can expect a quicker recovery time compared to traditional biopsy methods, which often require more invasive approaches. The real-time imaging provided by ultrasound allows for immediate assessment and reduces the need for repeat procedures.
This pioneering achievement not only positions AIIMS Jammu as a leader in advanced medical practices but also underscores its dedication to providing high-quality healthcare to the region. The department plans to expand its use of Ultrasound, Fluoroscopic and CT guided procedures in Intervention Radiology like Biopsy, FNAC, Pigtail drainages/aspirations, Clip/markers placement, PCN, PTBD etc, further improving diagnostic & therapeutic capabilities and improving patient outcomes.
As healthcare continues to evolve, AIIMS Jammu remains at the forefront, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care through innovative and effective techniques.

AIIMS Jammu expands Horizons: Paediatric Surgeries now available for Infants and Children.

The health and well-being of a child are the cornerstones of a family's happiness. When a child suffers from illness, it impacts not only the young one but the entire family. Parents endure sleepless nights, their hearts weighed down by worry and uncertainty. But when a child is treated successfully, it is as though the entire family is given a new lease on life. The joy of seeing their child return to a healthy, vibrant life is immeasurable, and the sense of relief it brings cannot be put into words.

The Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Jammu, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta shared, “We recently had the privilege of performing three pediatric surgeries on children aged 11 months to under 18 years. These delicate procedures included a right orchidopexy for an 11-month-old infant and two corrective surgeries for congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), commonly known as clubfoot. Each surgery was performed with precision, care, and dedication by our expert team. Despite the complexity of these procedures, our team remained steadfast in their commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young patient.” He explained, “We treated a 1-year-old male infant with a right-sided undescended te**is. After initial tests, we successfully performed surgery to move the te**is into the sc***um. Timely surgery is key to preserving future function and preventing complications. The patient is now stable.” For the other two surgeries, Prof. Gupta said, “This is a big step forward in improving pediatric orthopedic care at the hospital, helping children with conditions like DDH, angular deformities, and clubfoot, lead healthy, active lives. Early diagnosis and treatment are key, and parents should consult specialists for any orthopedic concerns. The Orthopaedics Department at AIIMS Jammu will provide all necessary specialized surgeries for children.” These surgeries mark the beginning of a new chapter in the healthcare landscape of Jammu & Kashmir.

With each successful procedure, we reaffirm our commitment to offering world-class medical care to the region's youngest and most vulnerable patients. The ripple effect of these treatments will be felt not just within individual families, but across communities as we help to build a healthier future for the next generation. The Director extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for successfully performing these important procedures.

The skilled efforts of Dr. Vijay Kundal, Dr. Akshat Sudhanshu, and the dedicated Pediatric Surgery team, along with the support of the Anesthesia team led by Dr. Raksha Kundal, Dr. Sandeepika Dogra, Dr. Anu Hansa, and our exceptional nursing officers, Disha and Diksha, exemplify the commitment and excellence we strive for. The Director appreciated the efforts of Dr. Amit Thakur, Office In-Charge of the Orthopedic Department, for his continuous support in ensuring the smooth ex*****on of the procedures. The Director recognized the exceptional work of the Orthopedic surgical team, including Dr. Rashid Anjum, Dr. Imran Sheikh, and Dr. Dheeraj, along with the Anesthesia team and the dedicated nursing staff. He said, “Your hard work and collaboration serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the incredible impact we can make together in transforming healthcare and improving lives. Keep up the outstanding work!” Through our efforts, we hope to transform the healthcare narrative in J&K, providing families with the confidence that their children can receive the highest standard of medical care right here, at home. This is just the beginning. AIIMS Jammu remains steadfast in its mission to enhance healthcare access, ensuring that every child has the chance to grow up healthy and every family has the joy of seeing their loved ones thrive.
The Director concluded, "When you educate a man, you educate an individual. But when you educate a woman, you educate a family. In a similar vein, when you heal one child, you bring new life and hope to an entire family. The impact of restoring a child’s health extends beyond that child alone—it enriches the lives of parents, siblings, and all who love them.”
