Kulith kalan - the summer drink
(Reposting from 2021)

- break outs and acne marks?
- frizzy hair?
- pigmented skin?
- low and moody?

Here’s a drink that will resolve it all without a fuss. The humble kulith kalan. An easy to prepare drink that’s made with buttermilk, kulith (horse gram) and spices, Kalan is traditionally used to keep the body cool in the hot summers.

It’s the perfect drink for late nights, after parties and my go to option when i don’t feel like a full lunch. Amino acids, polyphenols, good bacteria. this nutrient loaded drink is surprisingly light on the stomach too.

So if the heat is making you feel bloated, irritating your skin and leaving you sleepless, i strongly recommend that you sip on this.

Recipe -

Ingredients -

Buttermilk,
Ghee,
Jeera,
Hing,
Salt,
Sugar,
Green chillies

- Take the upper watery portion of cooked kulith. Allow to cool down a bit.
- Add buttermilk, chillies, salt, pinch of sugar, and season with jeera, hing in ghee.
- Don’t boil. Just heat till temp is about 50 degree C.

The work life balance that we want for ourselves is also the right of those who haven’t learnt to ask for it yet. A break from work not just improves efficiency but it makes one feel valued and respected at a very basic human level.

So i am advocating for all house help to get one confirmed weekly off. It’s good for our health and happiness as individuals and as a society.

How adolescents think and feel about their bodies has a long term impact on their mental health. Low moods, eating disorder, poor body image are all too common in teens and some studies suggest that it starts as young as 3-6. While all genders are affected, girls as usual, are most at risk.

Learning a classical art form like dance, or playing a sport, where the focus shifts to joy, performance, healthy competition, is a good deterrent to poor self esteem.

7-9 is a good age to start formal training in classical dance. And you could choose from over 8 different styles.
