Fresh export orders for tea, basmati from Iran, China and Russia

Iran, China and Russia have placed fresh orders for Indian black tea in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, a boost for the domestic industry which has incurred losses of about 100 million kg of teas owing to the lockdown. West Asian nations led by Iran have also placed orders for basmati rice, but traders are likely to miss the crucial Ramzan period, April 23-May 23, as it takes 40-45 days to ship the consignments.

Mohit Agarwal, director, Asian Tea, told ET: “There is good demand from Iran for orthodox teas. Their banks have opened and payments for the earlier consignments are coming. Exporters are buying privately since the auction centres are yet to open.”

Export sector may lose 15 million jobs unless immediate relief announced: FIEO

Above 15 million jobs may get lost in India’s export sector with half the orders getting cancelled and rising non-performing assets in exporting units, the apex body of exporters said on Friday.

“With cancellation of over 50% of orders and gloomy forecast for the future, we expect 15 million job losses in exports and rising NPAs amongst exporting units, hitting the economy very badly,” said Sharad Kumar Saraf, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).

The organisation’s estimate comes days after the International Labour Organisation said about 40 crore workers in India working in the informal economy are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis.

Speciality chemicals to be the next great export pillar for India: Varun Goel

If you see today, chemicals is a $36 billion industry already and various studies show that in the next six to seven years, this can become a $100 billion opportunity. The biggest learning for the world in this coronavirus crisis is that it is not a good idea to concentrate all manufacturing in one country or one manufacturing location. We see a lot of business coming to India. It was already anyway coming in the last few years because of trade war issues. Our per capita cost in terms of labour is also lower than China; so business was anyway shifting and this will again accelerate going forward.

So agrochemicals and APIs, pharma and a lot of consumer durables use a lot of chemicals. All these industries continue to show very good growth and as a result, we believe some of the speciality chemical companies should have a fairly long runway. Just to put things in perspective, despite a 30-year run now, IT today is a $100-110 billion export industry out of India. We missed the bus on semiconductors, we have missed the bus on electric vehicles but speciality chemicals would be that industry which should be the next great export pillar after the IT industry as far as India is concerned.

Over 20% export orders cancelled

Covid-19 has led to exporters bleeding with upwards of 15-20% of the orders getting cancelled and a major amount of funds being locked up, owing to non-payment of dues by large buyers in the US, Europe and West Asia, prompting them to seek a bailout from the government.
