What does depression feel like?

Depression can be debilitating. Unfortunately not everyone understands that. The repetitive negative thoughts can become unbearable. It's not a process they can stop. It's not something they can wish away. They're not being negative.

If you know someone who's struggling with depression encourage them to get help.

If you see the world as negative from the inside out, then you’re going to experience it negatively from the outside-in. If you want to make a change, then you must begin to think from the inside out in a positive way. Cultivate your positive thinking, and you’ll begin to believe in them, and then begin to believe in yourself!

We can do this by focusing on the good things, no matter how small, starting your day with a positive affirmation, finding the positive in a negative situation and focusing on the present.

When you suspect a loved one is suffering from depression, or any other mental illness, you might feel worried or anxious about their health.

Here's what you can do:

1. Start by asking them how they've been feeling.

2. Make them aware of the impact of their mental health on your relationship.

3. Help find them a therapist with the experience and qualifications to help them cope.

4. Offer to drive them to their appointment or offer financial help if you can.

In case of an emergency, please email rahul@alightmind.com.

Another great way to help curb your anxiety is getting creative with painting.

To get the most out of painting remember these:

1. Don’t worry about lines or the perfect fill. Just focus on painting whatever way feels best to you (yes, you can have pink grass if you want to).

2. Try breathing in while painting up, and breathing out while painting down, or do as many different directions as you want - there’s no rules here!

3. Use different colours and different brush strokes.

The experience of receiving a digital dopamine ‘hit’ of short term pleasure from our likes is enough to keep us constantly refreshing our phone for notifications. Social media addiction is real, and there are de-addiction centers to cure it.

While it might seem tough (even unthinkable) to disengage from the devices we use for literally everything, it's doable and worth it. Here's how you can break free of the endless scroll of doom.

1. Shift your attention back to real life by spending IRL time with friends and family

2. Unplug and carve out time for your fave hobby

3. Set a schedule for social media. Try to pick a certain time of the day (say, 5 pm) instead of scrolling through every break.

4. Most phones have in-built timers to limit the amount of time you can spend on an app. You can also download an app like Rescue Time instead.

5. Remind yourself that whatever you see on social media is the highlight reel. Everyone has times when they’re not feeling their best, and those moments often don’t make it to the ‘gram.

6. You’re absolutely allowed to hit the unfollow button on content that triggers you or sends you spiralling. Curate your content! Follow accounts that accept all kinds of bodies, sexualities and gender expressions. Body-positive content has been shown to improve body image and mood, especially in women.

Of course, there are positives to social media: it’s probably how you found us. Reach out for a first session today!

When feeling stressed, anxious and overwhelmed, the first line of defence I would advise is some breathing exercises. Here's a simple one from our Anxiety First Aid Kit (link in bio):

1. Sit up straight on a chair and notice your breathing.

2. After a few seconds, concentrate on breathing into your belly. You can even bring your hands to your belly to focus your mind there. Don’t try to take a deep breath: just keep it even and relaxed, and let it deepen on its own.

3. Feel your belly swell like a balloon as you breathe in. Notice the short pause between the inhale and exhale. Now feel the belly go back toward the spine as you breathe out. Keep following this movement with your mind.

If thoughts pop up, it’s okay. Gently bring your mind back to your breathing.

If you can, write down how you felt during this exercise.

If we’re not mindlessly flipping through Instagram stories, we’re combing Twitter for the latest viral , or perhaps going down a Reddit black hole. While all these platforms have become a source of comfort during this lockdown, social media and mental health generally have a relationship best sorted under ‘it’s complicated’. Scrolling mindlessly has turned into a trap most of us (yes, even therapists) easily fall into.

With a few simple steps, you can break free of the endless scroll of doom.
