** FEVER IN KIDS **

Parents might worry when a child’s temperature rises, but fever itself causes no harm and can actually be a good thing — often, it’s the body’s way of fighting infections.

Signs and Symptoms
A child who has a fever might be:

fussy
uncomfortable
warm to the touch
flushed
sweaty
What to Do
It’s best to keep a child home from school or childcare until the temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours. If your child is uncomfortable, here are some ways to relieve symptoms:

Offer plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration.
Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen based on the doctor’s recommendations. Do not give aspirin.
Never use rubbing alcohol or cold baths to bring the fever down.
Dress your child in lightweight clothing and cover with a light sheet or blanket.
Let your child eat what he or she wants, and don’t force eating if your child doesn’t feel like it.
If your child also is vomiting and/or has diarrhea, ask the doctor if you should give a children’s oral rehydration solution (also called oral electrolyte solution or oral electrolyte maintenance solution).
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest.
Get Medical Care if:
an infant younger than 3 months old has a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
an older child has a fever and:
looks sick
develops a rash
has lasting diarrhea and/or repeated vomiting
has signs of dehydration (peeing less than usual, not having tears when crying, less alert and less active than usual)
has a fever for 5 days
has a chronic medical problem like sickle cell disease, heart problems, cancer, or lupus
Think Prevention!
Fevers are unavoidable. The key is to make your child as comfortable as possible until the fever passes, and get medical treatment when needed.

**STOMACH PAIN AND DIARRHOEA IN KIDS **
Dealing with gastroenteritis can be quite easy for a person with a healthy immune system. However, the disease can be fatal for infants and older adults with limited immunity. Besides the tips suggested above, consider drinking only clean boiled water, cooking food, and avoiding raw and undercooked foods. For those already affected by gastroenteritis, perhaps the most important symptom to watch out for is dehydration.

👨‍⚕️How to Help Toddler Cough?

💦Provide enough fluids to loosen mucus and prevent dehydration.
🍜Hot soups and broths can help relieve chest irritation and pain.
🥛Warm water can also ease coughing in toddlers.
🍯Giving half or a teaspoon (2 to 5 ml) of honey can help loosen mucus and ease cough. 🐝Do not give honey to babies younger than one year old as it can cause infant botulism.
💦Humid air reduces cough as it contains water vapours. Use a cool steam humidifier in the room or hang a wet cloth to humidify the air.
🆒Breathing in cold air can relieve croup cough. Let your child breathe cold air near the window or a fan. You can also take them outside.
Avoid physical activity until the cough has passed.
🥜Avoid giving children younger than four certain foods such as nuts, popcorn, and pieces of hard food because they can breathe into the airway when swallowing.

Newborn care series :

1. Holding a newborn
Your newborn may feel fragile and sensitive towards you, but don’t be afraid to touch, touch or hold her! In fact, studies show that babies who are kept more than 2 hours a day develop better and cry less. No babysitting guide is complete without this valuable advice!

Remember, your newborn’s neck muscles are not yet developed, so you will need to support his head every time you take it in your hand. You should also support his head on your shoulder or with your opposite hand while carrying it.

Here are a few basic points to remember while handling a newborn:

Before touching your baby, wash your hands (or use a hand sanitizer). Newborns do not have a strong immune system, so they are at risk of infection. Make sure everyone who takes care of your baby has clean hands.
Support your baby’s head and neck. When carrying your baby, cradle his head and support his head when carrying the baby upright or lying down.
Never shake your newborn during play or in frustration. Shaking a baby can be very dangerous and can cause brain bleeding and even death. If you need to wake your baby, don’t shake her- instead tickle your baby’s feet or blow gently on a cheek.

The potential for allergic reactions to food can be a major source of stress for parents! Here's some helpful info :

When introducing your baby to solids, here are a few things to keep in mind!

🥜 The most common allergens are: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, soybeans, seeds and wheat

👶 Early introduction is key! These common allergens should be introduced to your child's diet as soon as they start eating solids (generally around 6 months)

🍳 Introduce 1 new food at a time. Give your child the food each day for 3-5 days. If no reaction, you can add on another new food

🥵 Allergy symptoms to watch out for: hives, rash, diarrhea/vomiting breathing difficulty/wheezing, tongue/face/lip swelling

🥜 Ask your Pediatrician at Kids Docs Clinics for more about introducing foods for kids at risk!

OTC and home remedies for cold symptoms!

✳The bottom line:
🙅‍♀️ OTC cough and cold products are not adequately studied in children under 6 and are NOT recommended for treating the common cold in this age group. They don't actually help children cough less or sleep better!

🌱There is no evidence to suport the use of eucalyptus oil or echinacea

💦Saline nasal irrigation or drops can be effective for nasal congestion or cough caused by post-nasal drip

🍯If your child is coughing and OVER 1 YEAR of age, you can try giving some honey. This has been studied and there is some evidence for efficacy! Half a teaapoon for ages 1-5 years, one teaspoon for 6-11 years.🥄

💧a cool mist humidifier can help with nasal congestion - make sure to clean and dry it each day to keep mold and bacteria from growing

🤧Remember‼a viral upper respiratory tract infection (aka the common cold) is self-limiting, with symptoms usually lasting between 7-10 days, but cough can last up to 4 weeks! If your child's symptoms worsen, speak to their doctor!

Kids Docs Childrens Clinics

🧸Separation anxiety develops around 6-9 months of age, as children start to develop an understanding of object permance (when you leave, they have awareness that you still "exist" and that you're gone). Some toddlers skip this phase in infancy and start showing signs between 15-18 months. As they get older, separation time might get louder with tearful tantrum-filled goodbyes. 😟

Specific tips:
🔹️keep your good-bye rituals short and sweet. If you linger, the transition time is longer, which can increase anxiety
🔹️ be consistent: try to keep the same drop-off routine every day if you can. This will allow your child to build trust in his/her independence and in you.
🔹️keep your promise: tell them you'll be back to pick them up "after nap time" or "after afternoon snack". Use language that's concrete. After a few days of consistency, your child will become confident in their ability to be without you when you stick to your promise of return.
🔹️prepare: practice being apart! This is harder to do during a pandemic, but even just leaving your child with another caregiver for an hour will help! Give them a chance to prepare, experience and thrive in your absence!

👩‍❤️‍👨Separation anxiety usually subsides by 2-3 years of age. If it persists and impairs your child's ability to attend school or function in social situations, it could be a sign of separation anxiety disorder- talk to your child's doctor!

Kids Docs Childrens Clinics

🚑 Fever is one of the top reasons for a visit to the clinic or pediatric ER.

So let's break it down!

✳What is fever?
🌡Fever is an elevated body temperature that represents the body's response to an infection or inflammatory process. It is a physiologic (i.e. completely NORMAL) response to infection
🌡 In general, fever is a temperature > 38°C OR 100.4°F

✳ Fever phobia
🌡Fever itself is NOT dangerous
🌡Fever is not an illness or diagnosis- it's sign that your child likely has an infection and that the body is responding to it.
🌡A higher temp doesn't necessarily mean a more severe infection! Your child's overall state - energy level, fluid intake, urine output and presence or absence of associated symptoms - matters more!

💉👨‍⚕️Manage fever for comfort with acetaminophen (children's paracetamol) or ibuprofen if > 6 months and hydration. Never give a child aspirin for fever!

⚠️ Seek immediate medical attention if:
👶 child 38.0°C
🤒 child is very irritable and difficult to console, drowsy or lethargic
🍼 child unable to drink/concern for dehydration or associated symptoms such as increased work of breathing
🧒 child with an underlying condition associated with immune deficiency or other diagnosis that puts them at higher risk

👩‍⚕️you should also consult a doctor if fever persists > 3 days
