By 2035, it is projected, over 50% of the world's population is predicted to be overweight or obese by 2035, according to the World Obesity Federation.

The adult obesity rate in India was expected to increase from 1.2% in 1990 to 9.8% for women and from 0.5% to 5.4% for men by 2022. It was reported that around 4.4 crore women and 2.6 crore men were affected by obesity in 2022. Women in India get overweight at the highest rate⬆⬆⬆.

Obesity among children in India has rapidly increased. Statistics from 2022 indicate that around 1.25 crore children aged 5 to 19 years are overweight compared to normal. This number was 40 lakh in 1990.

The fact that 56.4% of the total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets. The ICMR report observes that the upsurge in the consumption of highly processed foods, laden with sugars and fat, coupled with reduced physical activity and limited access to diverse foods, exacerbate micronutrient deficiencies and overweight/obesity problems.

Higher BMI increased fat tissue raises estrogen levels abnormally and this disrupts the normal hormonal cycle and can prevent ovulation. It also raises the risk of PCOS, Insulin resistance, and irregular periods.

Lower BMI lacks the necessary fat to produce enough estrogen, due to this the brain stops signaling ovaries to ovulate. Periods may become irregular and stop altogether.

The final conclusion is that being on the ideal weight with the right eating habits can have better chances to lead a healthy lifestyle.
