All eyes on me

This little chilli may look small but it sure does pack a punch.

With an average Scoville score measuring about 50,000-1,00,000, the Bird’s Eye Chilli, as it is popular known, is right up there when it comes to spicy chillies.

As the name suggests, the chilli gets its name from the resemblance it has to that of a bird’s eye. On the contrary, the locals in Meghalaya (particularly the Khasis/Pnars) refer to it as ‘sohmynken khnai’ which literally translates to ‘mouse chilli’, which is also kind of fitting considering the chilli is small.

The Bird’s Eye is a popular choice for pickled chillies or chutneys but is also consumed whole. Dried chilli flakes are also a popular way of consuming this chilli (check out our Bird’s Eye chille flakes through the link below!).

Have you ever tried this chilli before? Is it really up there with the undisputed Bhut Jolokia? Let us know in the comments down below! 🤗

Against all odds.

Another long one, but you have got to read this 👇

Our farmer partners never cease to amaze us every time we meet them. They’re literally our source of inspiration. Pyndaplang Hasem is one of them and her story is truly inspiring 💛

A couple of posts ago we talked about our partner farmer, Bah Mihwan, and his amazing Ing Makhir ginger.

Today we want to introduce you to another Ing Makhir farmer we partnered with. Her name is Pyndaplang Hasem.

This past year, around the same time we met Bah Mihwan, we started working with Pyndaplang as well. Back then only one member of our team was able to meet her. But yesterday, a few of the other team members got the chance to visit her.

She has been growing the mighty Ing Makhir for ages in the nearby forest. They still use the traditional farming method where they clean the small part of the forest, sow the ginger, and let nature take care of it.

One of the most heart touching things we came to know about Pyndaplang was the fact that she has been raising and supporting 10 orphans on top of her 5 kids! 15 kids in total, can you believe that? 😦

When asked if it was hard for her to support all the children, she mentioned that though the standard of living was is not so high, she is happy. All her hard work through farming has been enough for her to sustain her family and she’s happy with that.

Hearing all of this made us realize how important our role has become with our partner farmers. We went there to seek the Ing Makhir ginger, and we came back with 1.5 tons of it, plus a 100 tons lot of love, admiration, and respect for Pyndaplang’s big heart and unwavering determination.

We just had to share this amazing story with ya’ll cause how could we not? 😩

Don’t forget to share this story with all your family, friends and loved ones. And let us know what you think about it in the comments down below! 🤗

Ethical beekeeping practices

Honey is one of nature’s most precious gifts to humans. We consume it almost on the daily and to be honest we just can’t get enough of it.

Bees spend a crazy amount of time and energy to make honey only for us to harvest it in an instance. Now, while the harvesting part is not something to worry about, the amount of harvested honey is something to keep in mind.

In this short video, our beloved beekeeper, Kong Elvira, talks about the traditional beekeeping practices that she follows.

As highlighted by Kong Elvira in the video above, when harvesting honey, she stresses on why it is important to leave behind some amount of honey in the hive for the bees.

During lean months or wintertime, bees tend to feed on their own honey to stay alive. Hence it is important to make sure that there is enough food for the bee to feed on for their survival.

If everything is harvested, there’s a high chance that the bees would die or move to another hive in search for food.

It is therefore important to maintain the cycle and not break it. And that is done by following ethical beekeeping practices like this one.

Do you know any other ethical beekeeping practices? Let us know in the comments down below 😊

Honey from the wettest place on planet earth.

Today we’re talking HONEY!

More specifically our very own Pure Wildflower Mawsynram Honey 🥰

To begin with you must be wondering why the name ‘Mawsynram’?

Well, not sure if you don’t know this already but Mawsynram village in Meghalaya is famous for being the ‘wettest place on earth’ according to the Guiness World Record. Yep, this place receives the highest rainfall ever in the world! 🌧

And it so happens that our honey comes from this very place! 😍

So, what’s special about this honey?

First off, our all our honey is pure, raw, and completely unadulterated 💯

Our Mawsynram honey is also known as wildflower honey or multiflora honey as the bees feed on different floral sources and not just one.

The special thing about multiflora honey is that you get to experience different flavours all combined into one instead of just one uniform flavour.

And of course, there’s no honey without the beekeeper.

And SHE goes by the name Elvira Kharchandy 🥰

Kong Elvira (Kong is the Khasi people's respectful way of addressing women in Meghalaya) has been providing us with this fine honey since 2019.

Owing to lack of a proper market, Kong Elvira was the one who reached out to us back then. She wanted to expand her market beyond the local markets.

3 years down the line and her honey is loved and adored by people all over India 🥰

Truly an inspiring tale of a self-made entrepreneur, don't you think? 😊

Have you tried our honey before? Let us know in the comments down below! 🤗

Why you should try Ing Makhir ginger

If you’ve been following our posts for a long time now, you’d probably know a thing or two about Meghalaya’s potent indigenous ginger root — Ing Makhir ginger.

This potent ginger variety is specifically native to Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills, and the locals have been using it for the longest time now, fully aware of the amazing potential it has.

What kind of potential, you may ask?

Well to begin with, the Ing Makhir is known to possess the highest gingerol content of all the ginger varieties that are available here in India. And if you’re familiar with gingerol, you’d know exactly how effective it is for your body.

Generally, ginger is known to possess multiple benefits such as lowering cholesterol levels, aiding indigestion, relieving headaches and nausea, and so much more.

If normal ginger can do all of this, you can only imagine how effective the Ing Makhir ginger can be when it comes to these same benefits.

Here at Zizira, one of our goals is trying to maximize the best out of these amazing herbs or spices through our fine range of value-added products.

Haven’t tried Ing Makhir yet? What are you waiting for? Click on the link below to check it out! 🤗

P.S- Don’t forget to share this post with your family, friends and loved ones so that they can know more about this fine ginger as well!

Where it all began.

Just to set the context here, up until a couple of years ago no body knew about Lakadong turmeric and where it came from.

Fast forward to 2022 and almost every consumer and producer are trying to get their hands on this ‘miracle spice’.

But where exactly did Lakadong turmeric come from?

Well, to begin with the Laskein Community and Rural Development Block of West Jaintia Hills is home to a cluster of villages such as Iooksi, Umsalait, Shangpung, Mookaiaw, and a host of other hamlets including our very own Lakadong village.

According to certain farmers, the Lakadong turmeric that we know now had been growing abundantly in the wild for the longest time here in Lakadong before people started growing it in their fields.

Also, before people started calling it Lakadong turmeric, the turmeric was previously known as ‘Shangpung turmeric’ or ‘turmeric from Shangpung’. Shanpung was the first prominent market hub back in the early days and hence a lot of farmers would come and ground, pack, and market their turmeric in this village.

As the years went by, and as people started to realize the potential of Lakadong turmeric, farmers from the villages mentioned above (plus other villages as far as Khatkasla, Saphai, etc.) started growing the Lakadong turmeric.

Today, almost all the villages in the Laskein block are growing this fine turmeric. While some farmers still insist that Lakadong village is the birthplace of Lakadong turmeric, other farmers would beg to disagree.

Irrespective of the origin though, one thing is certain about this mighty turmeric. Wherever it may grow in the Laskein block, the characteristics and features remain the same throughout.

All in all, there’s just something special about the place, soil, climate, and topography of these hills which makes them harbour the best turmeric variety in India, if not the world!
Fun Fact: The visuals you see above dates all the way back to our first ever trip to Lakadong back in 2019.

New harvest!

If you haven’t tried our Lakadong turmeric yet, this year’s harvest will probably tempt you to do so right now 😉

A mere glance at the lush green turmeric plants in the visuals above and you can already tell that this year’s harvest is a mighty good one 😍

Aside from a couple pest infested plants (something that farmers are still struggling with) this year’s harvest has proven to be quite healthy 🥰

According to Kong Hun (our farmer partner) some turmeric plants grow up to a staggering height of 6 ft! Something which she had never seen before in any of her previous harvests 😮

Kong Hun has always been growing the mighty Lakadong turmeric organically without the use of any chemical fertilizers, and this year’s good harvest couldn’t be more thrilling for her 😊

A couple days back the team embarked on a journey to Mynriah (the village where our 7000 Steps Coffee coffee is sourced from) to distribute more than a 1000 coffee plants to the coffee farmers in this village as the farmers were looking to expand their coffee plantations owing to increasing demand.

The journey to Mynriah took about 5 hours from Shillong and on top of that we had to stop at a village called Umtong as the road was not motorable anymore after Umtong.

Trekking wasn't really a problem for us as were pretty much used to it. But what made this journey slightly difficult for us was the fact that we had to carry the coffee plants all the way down to the village.

And we had to carry the plants on our back, using the traditional Meghalaya bag pack— the 'khoh'.

At first, it was all alright. But when the weather started to get bad on us and it started getting foggy and rainy, things got much harder for us. The slippery steps and the weight started to take a toll on us, but we persevered and after what felt like the longest 2 hours of our lives, we finally reached Mynriah!

When we reached the village, we were greeted by the village headman who sneaked a little smile at us, almost as if he was congratulating us on this huge milestone we had achieved.

Even though we carried only 1/4th of the total coffee plants (the rest was carried the day after by the villagers) we felt good about ourselves and what we accomplished that day.

Keeping it sustainable.

What you see here is no ordinary polyhouse. This is Zizira’s homemade Solar Dryer 😍
The herbs and spices (yes including our amazing Lakadong turmeric) that you have on your kitchen shelves right now have been dried in this very solar dryer.

Keeping up with the basic principles of the greenhouse effect, our solar dryer has been ingeniously innovated using easy-to-find materials making it simple and unbelievably effective.

How does it work?

As the sun’s rays pass through the walls and roof of the solar dryer, the chamber gets heated up.

The heated air then passes through the entire chamber while simultaneously absorbing the moisture from the ingredients laid out evenly in mesh trays.

While passing through and over the chamber, the heated air absorbs moisture from the sliced ingredients, hence resulting in fast, efficient, and eco-friendly drying.

This innovation has helped us to efficiently retain all the colour, flavour, and aroma of the herbs and spices that ultimately becomes the prized Zizira products that you have in your kitchen shelves 🥰

With the help of our Saphai Processing Unit in Jaintia hills, we have been able to help farmers dry their turmeric and ginger at a fraction of the cost using this very innovation!

Have you ever seen this indigenous invention before? Let us know in the comments down below 🤗
