Hands-on adjustments, when offered with consent and awareness, are a valuable teaching tool in the yoga classroom. They are not about correction, but about communication—between teacher and student, between intention and alignment.
A skilled teacher uses adjustments to:
– Offer clearer proprioceptive feedback
– Support healthy alignment and prevent injury
– Encourage more balanced engagement of muscle groups
– Help the student access greater stability or mobility in a pose
– Deepen the student’s embodied understanding of the practice
The presence of a knowledgeable teacher—observing, guiding, and responding in real time—creates a safe and intelligent container for growth. While verbal cues are essential, tactile feedback can often translate the essence of a posture more directly into the body.
At its best, a hands-on adjustment is a moment of connection and clarity—an invitation to inhabit the pose more fully and with greater awareness.
