Structural Medicine is an advanced form of bodywork that uses myofascial release, postural analysis, and movement re-education to restore proper alignment and function to a client’s body, relieving injuries, chronic pain, and movement dysfunctions. It bridges mainstream medicine’s well-established and proven evaluation tools (strength, range-of-motion, posture) with the latest scientific developme

nts in alternative treatment therapies (manual therapy, myofascial release, movement and neuromuscular re-education, energetics, and dialogue). It uses a customized evaluation process called Myofascial length testing (MFLT) which provides a baseline of a person’s physical restrictions and allows the practitioner to monitor client progress and modify the treatment program to enhance improvements. This extensive evaluation of postural alignment addresses the balance in myofascial tone, length, and strength. Through myofascial reorganization, Structural Medicine sessions move the body closer to a more efficient organization and improved function in gravity. It uses an integrative process to develop a new sense of awareness which is used to re-shape posture, movement patterns, and a person’s sense of self which often results in a reduction in pain and improved function.

The Structural Medicine Approach to Client Treatment- A Complimentary Learning Event. We’ve all had clients who present with unique and formidable histories and complex pain. As Manual Therapists, we can get lost and overwhelmed by the details. So how do we synthesize a client’s history, our assessment, and the client’s goals to create a customized treatment plan?

Join Donna Bajelis, PT, SMS and Joe Kelly, ACSMS, BCSI, GCFP, LMT, for a complimentary learning event. Discover how Structural Medicine applies a multidisciplinary approach encompassing Physical Therapy and Structural Integration techniques to develop customized treatment plans to address the complexity of factors relating to client pain and dysfunction.

Donna Bajelis is the founder of the Institute of Structural Medicine and the developer of Myofascial Length Testing. With over 45 years in Physical Therapy and Structural Integration, Donna will show us how to go beyond the textbook approach to treating injuries and feel more confident assimilating a client’s history, testing, and structural patterns into a customized treatment plan.

Student’s Learning Objectives

Learn how to take and interpret a detailed client history.
Visual assessment analyzing a client’s structure in gravity, both postural and structural
Myofascial Length Testing (MFLT) appropriate to the client’s pain complaints and organization of their postural patterns

How rich is your movement? When was the last time you rolled on the ground? Inverted yourself? Jumped, kicked, or swung? As you acquire more movement complexity you will become more armored to injury and more capable of dealing with all of life’s situations. Many adults as they get older injure them themselves falling. Learning to roll from the ground to your feet and reversing the movement back to the ground is a worthy movement practice!

Unlocking the Pain in Your Neck

A 4-Part Movement Series

Your neck doesn’t have an easy job. It supports the weight of a bowling ball balanced on top of a very long lever called the spine. Many factors can impact the healthy function of your neck, such as poor posture, eyesight, whiplash, overuse, lack of skeletal support, challenging children 😊 (stress), etc. Sometimes the cure is as easy as new prescription eyewear, but often it’s an accumulation of habits we’ve come to acquire.

This four-part series will explore finding greater comfort, ease, support, and connection. You’ll discover how the neck is connected to the arms, shoulders, thoracic spine, and pelvis. All these parts must work collectively to avoid developing problem areas where sheering or compressive forces begin to poke at your neck!

You will learn concrete movement principles to address your neck discomfort. These will include concepts such as:

The carriage of the head serves to tonify the body

Support- your muscular tension is dependent on the specificity of support from the surface.

Skeleton affords the ideal path for action

Evenly distributed muscular tone

Through the four lessons, you will understand how to produce efficient movement free of parasitic muscular contraction. You will discover more support, stability, and ease in your neck movements and the rest of your body. The lessons will demonstrate that there is no limit to learning or refinement. They are simply a launching board for self-directed learning, as these principles can be applied to your daily activities and sports.

Finding Your Stride

A 4-Hour Workshop

Have you ever been in awe of how fluid and effortless a person walks or moves? Most of us train for fitness, yet we don't teach our bodies to move better. When we lack the proper recruitment, initiation, foundation, and pathway, at a minimum, it creates inefficient movement or can lead to wear and tear and acute injuries.

This workshop will uncover the secrets to healthy, effortless walking. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or want to find better comfort in your stride, you will gain a deep understanding of the movement principles at play to produce efficient, smooth strides.

You’ll become acquainted with your historical walking habits and how they may lead to inefficiencies, tension, and discomfort. As the lessons progress, you’ll invoke more integrity, skeletal support, and coordination to move effortlessly in your stride.

We will cover

How to avoid collapsing and sheering forces that cause pain

How to organize your skeleton for ideal action

What is good posture?

Heel striking, pronation, supination

Is there a “correct” way to walk?

Shoes and clothing

Movement on uneven terrain

Moving up and down stairs/terrain

I know you’ll find something new to appreciate about your stride, and I bet your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back will thank you afterward for prioritizing your health!

Workshop Details:

Saturday, September 10th

9am-1pm
