Does every Parent or Teacher deserve respect?
A couple of interviews on Social media prompted me to write this.
Respect and submission is so ingrained in Indian culture that it becomes almost criminal to question it. But when you see a World cup winner's father ranting on the internet and an IIT-ian turned Baba at Kumbh , you are compelled to think deep about what ails our society.
Yograj Singhβs harsh and public criticism of Yuvraj, specially the early years of his career, reflects an abusive dynamic that led to emotional and psychological challenges for Yuvraj. Instead of fostering a supportive environment, an almost psychopathic Yograj's treatment sometimes bordered on hostility, which understandably made it difficult for Yuvraj to offer him unconditional respect in his mature years.
While the whole of India is marvelling at why a successful IITian would give up his cushy job to take up spirituality, if you have the eye to see it- you would identify a story of childhood neglect , a young boy disillusioned by parental conflict and probably high on w**d while giving interviews.
Perhaps if we really knew what is wrong , we would not be so hung-up on respect to parents and teachers by virtue of their mere position , but what they actually contribute to young people's lives.
Respect should not be a one-sided demand, but a reciprocal bond that depends on understanding, kindness, and guidance.
