A historic breakthrough in medical science.
For the first time, doctors have successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a human, marking a major milestone in cross-species organ transplantation (xenotransplantation).
In 2024, surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital performed a pig kidney transplant in a living patient with end-stage kidney disease. The donor organ came from a genetically engineered pig developed by eGenesis to reduce the risk of rejection.
This advancement brings new hope to millions of patients worldwide waiting for kidney transplants. According to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), thousands of patients die every year while waiting for a suitable donor organ.
Why this matters: • Could reduce the severe shortage of human donor organs
• May shorten transplant waiting lists globally
• Opens the door for future heart, liver, and other organ xenotransplants
Although long-term success and safety are still being studied, this marks a turning point in transplant medicine.
Medical science is evolving faster than ever — and the future of organ transplantation may look very different in the coming years.
