Spondylitis is a group of chronic, inflammatory, and often autoimmune conditions causing stiffness and pain primarily in the spine, potentially leading to vertebrae fusion (ankylosis). Symptoms include persistent lower back pain, morning stiffness, reduced mobility, and sometimes fatigue. It mainly affects young adults, with no cure, but treatment (NSAIDs, biologics, exercise) manages symptoms
Symptoms of Spondylitis
Chronic Pain & Stiffness: ➡️Pain, particularly in the lower back, hips, or buttocks, that is often worse at night or after inactivity and improves with movement.
Reduced Mobility: ➡️A stiff spine, leading to difficulty bending or turning.
Reduced Breathing Capacity: ➡️If the ribs are affected, deep breathing becomes difficult.
Systemic Issues:➡️Fatigue, low-grade fever, loss of appetite, and eye inflammation (uveitis).
Postural Changes: ➡️A stooped, "hunched" posture in advanced stages.
Main Cause and Risk Factors☑️
Main Cause: ➡️The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic factors, the immune system, and environmental factors.
Genetics: A strong link exists with the HLA-B27 🧬gene.
Demographics: ➡️Typically begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, and is more common in men.
Prognosis and Treatment
Prognosis: While there is no cure, the disease course varies. Many manage it well, though it can lead to permanent stiffness, reduced mobility, and fusion of the spine.
Treatment: ⬇️
✅Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
✅Physical Therapy: Specialized exercises and posture training are critical to maintain spinal flexibility.
✅Surgery: Rare, but sometimes required for severe hip pain or severe spinal deformity.
