How to research health information safely

If you are worried about symptoms, always prioritize consulting a licensed healthcare provider. If you want to perform research, use these tips to stay safe and informed:

Use reliable sources: Search sites from reputable sources, such as government health agencies (.gov), large non-profit organizations, and recognized medical institutions.

Check the source: Reputable websites will list their sources and citations and provide contact information for the organization.
Look for recency: Check the date when the information was published or last updated to ensure it is relevant.

Glaucoma, a condition that causes gradual damage to the optic nerve and leads to vision loss or blindness, is commonly managed by reducing eye pressure. However, the effectiveness of treatments can vary. Recent research suggests that homocysteine, previously believed to play a role in the disease, is not a cause but rather a bystander. The real culprit appears to be metabolic disruptions that affect the retina’s ability to use certain vitamins, prompting scientists to test B vitamins (B6, B9, B12) and choline supplements.

The findings, led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, show promising results. When rats and mice with glaucoma were given these vitamins, the progression of the disease slowed or, in some cases, halted completely, even without lowering eye pressure. This suggests that the vitamins may help protect the optic nerve through mechanisms unrelated to pressure control.

Interestingly, homocysteine levels did not correlate with disease progression, indicating it doesn’t drive glaucoma. Instead, metabolic changes in the retina, particularly its impaired ability to use essential vitamins, were found to be central to the disease’s development.

Encouraged by these results, a clinical trial is now underway to test the vitamin mix’s effectiveness in humans.

Recent research suggests that individuals with poor oral hygiene—particularly those experiencing gum disease or tooth loss—may face a significantly higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. One large-scale analysis involving over 30 million people found that poor oral health doubled the risk of Alzheimer’s, even after adjusting for age, gender, and other laboratory factors. Conditions such as tooth loss and periodontal disease emerged as especially strong contributors.

These findings are supported by imaging studies showing that features of gum disease correlate with early markers of Alzheimer’s in the brain. Notably, researchers involved in the Washington Heights–Inwood Columbia Aging Project observed that signs of periodontitis were linked to imaging indicators of neurodegeneration—highlighting a possible pathway where oral inflammation might affect brain health.

Emerging evidence is also exploring the mechanisms behind this connection. Harmful oral bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis—often present in gum disease—have been detected in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer’s. Studies suggest these bacteria may promote neuroinflammation and the formation of amyloid plaques, one of the disease’s signature changes.
