Lt. name - Papaevar somniferum (O***m poppy)
Family - Papaveracae

Two parts are useful
1. O***m that is latex exudate of fruit
2. Seeds called as khus khus or Poppy Seeds

Chemical constituents

_O***m_ -
contains up to 80 alkaloids, including morphine and codeine, which have been used for the treatment of severe pain & anxiety for generations.

_Poppy Seeds_ -
Poppy seeds normally do not contain o***m alkaloids.
Rich in fibre, plant fats, antioxidants & essential nutrients.

Fats- Linoleic acid is major unsaturated fatty acid found in seeds
Antioxidants - Polyphenols (reduces risk of cardiac diseases)
Elements - Potassium, Calcium & Magnesium (helps to reduce stress hormone cortisol), Copper, Zinc & Iron.
Also contain Manganese (good for blood clotting and bone health)

In my clinical practice
I do recommend 1.5 to 2 gms of Poppy seeds roasted in ghee to be taken with 1/2 cup of milk at bed time for it's benefits.
For Weight Gain purpose weekly twice a payasam of Khus khus is recomended.
We do recommend to use to garnish vegetable with Poppy seeds in some patients.

Note Avoid O***m use without proper medical advise. We have highlighted use of Poppy seeds not O***m.

Digestion & Defecation -

_Digestion_ is breaking down of large food particles into small molecules to enter body cell.
_Defecation_ is elimination of variable amount of indigestible substances from GI tract through a**s.

Both these processes are of immense importance for maintaining health.

According to Ayurveda, Diseases are of two types based on Udbhava sthana -

1. AMASHAYA mainly Kapha Pitta Pradhan

2. PAKWASHAYA mainly Vata Pradhan

Ayurveda has generalised Agni & Vega's (natural urges) the 2 factors, disturbances in which are cause of most of diseases.

To Maintain normalcy of Aamsashya 3 eating patterns to be avoided -

1) _Adhyayasana_ (рдЕрдзреНрдпрд╢рди) refers to тАЬtaking meal on undigested mealтАЭ

2) _Samasana_ (рд╕рдорд╢рди ) refers to taking an admixture of desirable and undesirable food items.

3) _Viс╣гamasana_ (рд╡рд┐рд╖рдорд╛рд╢рди) refers to food taken untimely which is quantitatively either excess / low.

To maintain normalcy of PAKWASHAYA, Ayurveda advocates not to hold natural urges neither forcefully initiate them.

Basic advise to improve your digestion & defecation

1. Eat only when hungry & drink when thirsty

2. Eat has per your requirement take 2 meals a day rather than 3

3. Avoid heavy dinner late in night - better to go with early & easily digestible dinner

4. Be more Physically active - as prolonged sitting cause sluggish bowel movements.

5. Fluid intake - Take care of proper fluid intake

6. Rest - take atleast 7 hrs of sleep

Ayurveda is an instruction manual provided to us for maintaining the machine (ta**ra) called Human Body.

Ayurveda explains Human body on basis of Dosha(Functional unit), Dhatu ( Structural Unit) and Mala.

Structurally human body is made of Seven Dhatus which are
1. Rasa
2.Rakta
3. Mamsa
4.Meda
5.Ashti
6. Majja
7.Shukra
All dhatus are Snigdha in nature except Ashti.
* Note Nourishment of Ashti dhatu is dependent on Sneha.

Regarding Health Maintenance in Ayurveda Acharyas says -

Health can be maintained in two ways

1. Proper nourishment

2. Prevention from disease causative factors

As to keep deepa lighting we add oil ( indicates nourishment) and protect if from wind ( Indicates protection from harmful factors).

Simple panchakarma procedures are adovacted on daily basis by acharyas to maintain health & *nourish* dhatus, these are

1. *Abhangya* ( Oil Massage)
Oil application on full body on daily basis and if not possible atleast on Head, Ears and Feet should be done.

2. *Pratimarsha Nasya* ( Oil application/ administration in nasal cavity)

3. *Gandusha* - Retention of oil in oral cavity for several minutes.

4. *Karna Tarpana* - Oil application in Ears

5. *Matra Basti* - Oil E***a

Simple way for maintaining health & nourish is to maintain oleation ( snigdha quality) of this Dhatus.

" *Bone Befriend Gond* "

According to Ayurvedic Pancha Mahabhoot principle nourishment of *Asthi Dhatu*(skeletal system) is possible by the use of Prithvi (earthly) Pradhan dravyas. Gond is one of the Prithvi Pradhan dravya so highly recommended for Bone Health.

Gond is a natural edible gum.

Types - 2 common types used in India are

1. ACACIA / ARABIC GUM

It is the dried sap of acacia tree (babul tree) used for making gond ladoos.
Warm in nature so mostly used in Winters.

2. TRAGANTH / KATIRA GUM

It is obtained from dried sap of various legumes of astragalus family.
Majorly used to emulsify foods.
It has a cooling effect so mainly used in Summers.

Difference between two is Acacia Gum dissolve in water & Katira Gum swells turns like a jelly in water.

Garlic is a very powerful spice having many health benefits.
Garlic has been part of the kitchens for centuries. Garlic bulb is used in cooking, there are about 10тАУ20 cloves in a single bulb.

Latin name - Allium sativum

Family - Amaryllidaceae

Synonym- Rasona

Hindi: Lahasuna

Action of any herb is in Ayurveda is explained on basis of Ras Virya Vipaka.

Lashuna's:
*Rasa* : Pancha Ras,
Amla Rahita & Katu Pradhan
*Virya* : Ushna
*Vipak* : Katu
*Guna* : Guru Snigdha Sara
*Doshagnata* : Vata kapha shamaka

Scientific studies have showed that, Garlic is full of sulphurous compounds, including a chemical called *allicin* , which is responsible for its peculiar taste, along with it garlic also contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese & selenium.

*Benefits of Garlic -*

1. Prevents from Common cold
2. Improves Digestion
3. Relieves Constipation
4. Good for Weight loss

*Spine Health and Garlic*

In Ayurvedic texts " *Garlic Milk" (Lashuna Ksheerpaka)* has being advised for Sciatica & Low Back Pain.

*How to make it -*

Take 2 cloves of peeled garlic, chop it and add 1 cup of water & 1 cup of milk to it
Boil this mixture for 10 mins
Take this mixture in a cup without filtering it and consume it warm early morning empty stomach for minimum of 15 days.
Note if any adverse effects noted consult an Ayurvedic Consultant.

In my clinical practice for those not comfortable with Garlic Milk, I recommend to eat 1 clove of garlic frying with 1/4 tsp of ghee and consume it once it turns brown in colour.

Should be *avoided* by -
1. Pitta prakruti individuals
2. DuringSummer season
3. Suffering from Acidity

3 consideration of Spinal health maintenance
1. Excercise & Streching
2. Correct Posture during work & rest
3. Proper Diet

( _Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Herb_ )

Arthritis word is form of 2 words Arthron (joint)+ itis (inflammation).

There are various types of Arthritis but the 2 most common types are Osteoarthritis (OA) & Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Ginger

Lt. Name Zingiber officinale
Family Zingiberaceae

Part used - Rhizome (underground part of the stem) commonly used as a spice.

Ginger is used in 2 forms Wet & Dry
Wet is called as Adarak &
Dry is called as Shunti

There is difference between the two-

Shunti is Snigdha Ushna Laghu majorly acts on Vata Dosha / energy. Helpful for Joints.

Adarak is Ruksha Ushna Guru majorly acts on Kapha Dosha / energy. Helpful for Respiratory System.

In Ayurveda Ginger is also called as Maha Aoushad & Vishwa bhejshya because it has immense benefits.

Shunti / Dry Ginger is very effective in both the types of Arthritis OA & RA has it is best anti inflammatory herb also in addition it's cardio protective.

In my clinical practice, I recommend to use 2 gm of Shunti powder (Dry Ginger) daily early morning empty stomach with warm milk for Arthritis.
