Snapping Hip Syndrome (Coxa Saltans) –
Snapping hip syndrome is a condition in which a person feels or hears a clicking or snapping sensation around the hip during movement such as walking, rising from sitting, or climbing stairs.
Types
1. External snapping hip – Iliotibial band or gluteus maximus snapping over the greater trochanter (most common).
2. Internal snapping hip – Iliopsoas tendon snapping over bony structures in the front of the hip.
3. Intra-articular snapping hip – Due to problems inside the joint (labral tear, loose body).
Common Symptoms
• Audible or palpable “snap” during hip movement
• Hip pain or discomfort (especially with activity)
• Feeling of catching or locking
• Tightness in hip flexors or IT band
Risk Factors
• Athletes, dancers, runners
• Muscle tightness or imbalance
• Overuse or repetitive hip movements
Treatment (Mostly Conservative)
• Activity modification and rest
• Stretching of hip flexors & IT band
• Strengthening gluteal and core muscles
• Ice and anti-inflammatory medication
• Physiotherapy (manual therapy + exercise)
Prognosis: Most cases improve with physiotherapy and exercise; surgery is rarely needed.
