A session on 'Promoting Positive Mental Health, Resilience, and Well-being' was held at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University's Chauras Campus, wherein students demonstrated remarkable energy and openness, rendering the workshop truly special. The discussion was highly interactive, featuring active participation, thoughtful reflections, and a genuine willingness to explore mental health beyond theoretical frameworks. Key highlights included the distinction between mere absence of illness and mental health, encompassing coping, adapting, and growing through life's challenges, as well as common struggles faced by young individuals, such as stress, anxiety, and self-doubt. The session featured live demonstrations of simple yet effective techniques, including a guided 4-4-6 breathing exercise, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, and practical thinking patterns to manage negative thoughts. Furthermore, William Glasser's Choice Theory was explored to illustrate how behaviors are driven by needs for belonging, achievement, freedom, fun, and basic security. The attentive listening, curiosity, and honest engagement of students were notable, underscoring the importance of creating safe spaces for dialogue to normalize mental health conversations and encourage help-seeking behavior. Appreciation is extended to the organizing team, faculty, and students for their participation and warmth.

She came to the hospital looking tired in a way that goes beyond physical fatigue. It was exhaustion of years that never really left. For past 23 years she has been living with her husband who suffers from a severe mental illness. His condition had taken away his ability to work and live independently. He had frequent episodes of aggression- shouting, abusing her and doubting her character. He had to be admitted in the hospital yesterday night. Gram Pradhan of her village has to arrange the transportation from her home to the hospital.
Now she is exhausted not just because of her current situation but also because of multiple relentless arguments and critisizm she had to face in last two decades. She was blamed for not taking care of her husband when he wandered in night, eating garbage and shouting at people. Her exhaustion was also because of the failed attempt of recovery in the past when she somehow got courage to take her husband in a hospital in Delhi very far away from her remote village in uttarakhand. He was kept there in a mental health facility for almost four months. And she stayed with him in the ward fighting the mental illness alongaide with him not only as a supporting wife but also as a vigilant care giver. He was discharged and advised to take oral medicines on daily basis and a follow up after six months. His improvement was sustained only for two weeks after the discharge. After that he abruptly stopped taking medicines, leading to relapse into aggressivity, wandering tendencies and other psychotic symptoms of the illness. This cycle of hope followed by disappointment has been deeply discouraging for her.
Now she said that she had reached her limits. She is adamant now to admit her husband in any mental health facility where he can resides permanently. This is not a decision made out of lack of love, but out of sheer exhaustion and helplessness.

As mental health provider, it is important for us to recognize that chronic mental illness does not affect only the patientโ€”it profoundly impacts the caregiver. In this case, the caregiver has silently endured years of emotional, social, and physical burden. Her suffering deserves equal attention, empathy, and support...
