Advice for patients using oxygen at home:

1. Keep the oxygen concentrator in a warm, ventilated room to prevent freezing or moisture blockage in the tubing.

2. Maintain backup power or a spare cylinder for winter outages to avoid sudden interruption of oxygen supply.

3. Adjust oxygen flow only as advised by your doctor, usually targeting SpO₂ 88–92%.

4. Monitor your saturation; if SpO₂ stays high (>94%) on oxygen, reduce to the prescribed level after consulting your clinician.

5. Avoid increasing flow on your own to prevent over-oxygenation.

6. Keep oxygen equipment away from bukharis, heaters, and open flames, as oxygen-enriched air increases fire risk.

7. Regularly check tubing for kinks, ice condensation, or disconnection.

5 dangers of cold exposure for chest / heart patients:

1. Cold air causes sudden airway narrowing, triggering breathlessness, wheeze, or cough.

2. Low temperatures increase blood vessel constriction, raising BP and heart strain.

3. Cold exposure thickens the blood and increases clotting tendency, raising the risk of heart attacks.

4. Inhalation of cold, dry air reduces lung clearance and can exacerbate COPD, asthma, and infections.

5. The combined stress on lungs and heart during early cold hours makes morning walks risky for vulnerable patients.

Preventive steps :

1. Prefer late-morning walks once the temperature rises.

2. Wear layered thermal clothing, cover the nose and mouth with a warm mask or muffler to warm the air before inhaling.

3. Use doctor-prescribed inhalers or medications before stepping out if you have asthma or COPD.

4. Avoid sudden exertion; start with slow warm-ups indoors to reduce heart and lung strain.

5. Keep hydrated, avoid exposure to fog or pollution peaks, which worsen cold-related risks.

Advice for the people of Kashmir on vaccinations relevant to Chest diseases;

1. Get your annual influenza vaccine, preferably before winter peaks (highly recommended).

2. Ensure full COVID-19 vaccination and the latest booster, especially for adults with chronic resporatory diseases (optional).

3. Adults above 60 and patients with chronic lung diseases should take the pneumococcal vaccines (PCV-20 or PCV-13 + PPSV-23 as per schedule) to prevent pneumonia (highly recommended).

4. Patients with chronic respiratory issues should check their vaccination status during routine pulmonology visits.

5. Caregivers and family members of high-risk chest patients should also be vaccinated to reduce household transmission (highly recommended).
