Restoring Our Green Gold: A Call for a Massive Afforestation Drive

To effectively combat climate change, we must focus on replenishing our ever-depleting Green Gold—our forests. A well-coordinated effort involving the Departments of Forestry, Agriculture, and Horticulture can make a significant impact through the following three-phase approach:

Phase 1: Engaging Government Employees
There are approximately 4 lakh registered employees on the Human Resource Management Portal. If the government mandates all Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs) to ensure that each employee is provided with 10 saplings to be planted in their vicinity—whether in urban or rural areas—we can collectively plant around 40 lakh trees in a short span of time. This phase can be implemented during March and April, ensuring optimal plantation conditions.

Phase 2: Mobilizing Students for Large-Scale Plantation
To further extend this initiative, all school children (above Class 5) and university students should be encouraged to participate. If each student plants a few trees, this effort could lead to the plantation of crores of trees within a short period. The timeline for this phase can be planned by government departments based on the availability of saplings.

Phase 3: Rejuvenating Forests with Mass Participation
A large-scale afforestation drive should be launched in deeper forest areas, involving university students, volunteers, and NGOs. Their collective efforts can help restore degraded forests, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen ecosystems.

If this initiative is effectively implemented, it will significantly contribute to:
✔ Restoring our forest cover
✔ Reducing pollution levels
✔ Increasing rainfall frequency
✔ Enhancing water reservoirs and groundwater levels

I sincerely urge the Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor, the Hon'ble Chief Minister, and all respected District Developmentto take note of this proposal in the larger interest of society and future generations.
