Types of lumbar traction
-continous traction :it is also known as bed traction .It is done using low weight for several hours at one time .This type of traction is slightly in effective in seperating the spinal structures that are to be treated . Patient can not with stand huge weight . Which can cause seperation of the vertrebae for an extended time .
-Manaul traction :it is done by the therapist .manual technique designed to reduce pressure on affected vertebral discs that are causing pain. Traction is a manual 'stretching' of the spine which reduces pressure on the discs and therefore reduces the individual's pain.
- intermittent Mechanical traction-Mechanical Intermittent Traction helps relieve pain through decompression of lumbar or cervical discs and joints. This cyclical, painless stretching reduces pressure and promotes blood and fluid flow. This helps improve healing naturally.
- sustained/static traction-lumbar traction can be used in either a prone or a supine position. The flexed position tends to open the neuroforamin and stretch the posterior elements of the spine. Traction in the prone position with a normal amount of lordosis tends to unload the intervertebral disc more effectively.
