An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, typically in the arm, designed to facilitate hemodialysis for patients with end-stage kidney disease. This connection allows for efficient blood flow from the artery into the vein, enabling the vein to enlarge and strengthen over time—a process known as maturation—making it suitable for repeated needle insertions during dialysis sessions.
