Kamal Ud Din Andrabi, fondly known as the "Cycle Man" of Kashmir, passed away peacefully in 22 October 2020 at the remarkable age of 120 on a Friday night. Andrabi, a beloved figure in his community, left behind a legacy that will be remembered by generations. Born in 1900 in Malarata, Srinagar, he lived a life deeply embedded in the traditions and culture of Kashmir, spending his final years in Buchpora.
Andrabi earned the affectionate title "Cycle Man" due to his constant presence on his bicycle. He was a familiar sight in neighborhoods, always riding his cycle, wearing his signature dull black overcoat, an achkan, and a traditional karakuli cap. His attachment to his cycle was so profound that he became synonymous with it. Many residents recall seeing him daily, riding through the streets, embodying a spirit of dedication and consistency.
Despite his humble lifestyle, Andrabi was known for his sharp memory and familiarity with every family in the area. He was a man of warmth and character, often engaging with locals, remembering their names, family histories, and sharing anecdotes from his long life. One community member, Syed Wasim Iqbal, reminisced that Andrabi had once shared stories of hearing sermons from the revered religious leader Mirwaiz Rasool Sahib, offering a glimpse into his deep-rooted connection with Kashmiri history.
Though he had no formal accolades, Andrabi was a man of intelligence and wisdom, as reflected by stories passed down by locals. He was seen as a happy-go-lucky individual, always active, involved in discussions, and deeply embedded in his thoughts. His longevity, coupled with his lively nature, made him a cherished part of his community.
Many have paid tribute to Kamal Ud Din Andrabi, remembering him as a man who represented the endurance and spirit of old Kashmir. His death is felt as a significant loss, and his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. As one commenter expressed, "He was truly a cycle man," a simple yet fitting reflection of a life well-lived.
