Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 mm) that enter our food, water, and even the air. Since they are not biodegradable, they can accumulate in the body and environment. Research is still ongoing, but some known and possible side effects of microplastics on health include:
Health Effects on Humans
1. Digestive Issues – Can irritate the stomach and intestines, causing inflammation and gut imbalance.
2. Hormone Disruption – Many plastics contain chemicals like BPA and phthalates that interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) system.
3. Toxic Chemical Exposure – Microplastics can carry heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxic chemicals into the body.
4. Cell Damage – Studies suggest they may damage human cells, leading to oxidative stress and inflammation.
5. Respiratory Problems – When inhaled, they can lodge in the lungs and cause breathing issues, coughing, or even chronic inflammation.
6. Immune System Stress – Continuous exposure may weaken immunity, making the body more prone to infections and disease.
7. Reproductive & Developmental Effects – Some plastic chemicals are linked to reduced fertility and developmental issues in unborn babies.
8. Cancer Risk (Possible) – Long-term exposure to toxic additives in plastics may increase cancer risk (research is ongoing).
Environmental Impact (Indirect Effects on Humans)
Microplastics harm fish, birds, and animals → eventually enter the human food chain through seafood and water.
They damage soil fertility and crop quality, which may affect agriculture and nutrition.
⚠️ Important Note: Research is still evolving, and while evidence suggests harmful effects, scientists are still studying the full impact of microplastics on long-term health.
