•Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

•Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities.
For instance, in Jainism, Diwali marks the nirvana, or spiritual awakening, of Lord Mahavira,;

•In Sikhism, it honors the day that Guru Hargobind Ji, the Sixth Sikh Guru, was freed from imprisonment.

•Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well.

•South India celebrate Diwali as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.

•In northern India, they celebrate the story of King Rama's return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana by lighting rows of clay lamps.

In western India the festival marks the day that Lord Vishnu, the Preserver (one of the main gods of the Hindu trinity) sent the demon King Bali to rule the nether world.

•Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live. But there's one common theme no matter where people celebrate:

Dhanteras is the worship of lord Dhanvantari. Lord Dhanvantari, according to Hindu traditions, emerged during Samudra Manthan, holding a Kalasha full of Amrit  in one hand and the sacred text about Ayurveda in the other hand. He is considered to be the Vaidya of Gods.

The festival is celebrated as Lakshmi Puja which is performed in the evenings when lamps of clay (Diyas) are lit. Bhajans, devotional songs in praise of Goddess Lakshmi, are sung and Naivedhya of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess.

Festivities are to let us know that life is full of cheer and smiles. May prosperity be with you on this auspicious occasion of Dhanteras.

Foods that have great impact on your eye health and beauty include:
1. Fruits (especially those rich in vitamin C): Fill up on oranges, mangoes and strawberries
2. Vegetable sources of vitamin A: Eat more carrots, peaches, papaya, spinach and mangoes
3. High Zinc food sources: Include turkey, chicken, yogurt and fortified cereals in your diet
4. Nuts and seeds: Such as almonds, nuts, and sunflower seeds are rich sources of Vitamin E
For healthy eyes, try these natural beauty tips:

Try to rest and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night
