WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE?
Occupational medicine (also known as “occupational health”) is focused on the treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. Physicians trained in occupational medicine diagnose and treat work-related injuries much more effectively than most primary care physicians. They’re up-to-date on federal and state regulations for workforce health and safety, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), so they can make the best treatment plans and perform regulatory examinations. Occupational medicine physicians often work directly with employers to keep businesses running and employees safe and healthy on the job.

Mind/Body Connection: How Your Emotions Affect Your Health
People who have good emotional health are aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They have learned healthy ways to cope with the stress and problems that are a normal part of life. They feel good about themselves and have healthy relationships.

However, many things that happen in your life can disrupt your emotional health. These can lead to strong feelings of sadness, stress, or anxiety. Even good or wanted changes can be as stressful as unwanted changes. These things include:

Being laid off from your job.
Having a child leave or return home.
Dealing with the death of a loved one.
Getting divorced or married.
Suffering an illness or an injury.
Getting a job promotion.
Experiencing money problems.
Moving to a new home.
Having or adopting a baby.
Your body responds to the way you think, feel, and act. This is one type of “mind/body connection.” When you are stressed, anxious, or upset, your body reacts in a way that might tell you that something isn’t right. For example, you might develop high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer after a particularly stressful event, such as the death of a loved one.

Path to Improved Health
There are ways that you can improve your emotional health. First, try to recognize your emotions and understand why you are having them. Sorting out the causes of sadness, stress, and anxiety in your life can help you manage your emotional health. Following are some other helpful tips.

Express your feelings in appropriate ways.
If feelings of stress, sadness, or anxiety are causing physical problems, keeping these feelings inside can make you feel worse. It’s okay to let your loved ones know when something is bothering you. However, keep in mind that your family and friends may not always be able to help you deal with your feelings appropriately. At these times, ask someone outside the situation for help. Try asking your family doctor, a counselor, or a religious advisor for advice and support to help you improve your emotional health.

Live a balanced life.
Focus on the things that you are grateful for in your life. Try not to obsess about the problems at work, school, or home that lead to negative feelings. This doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be happy when you feel stressed, anxious, or upset. It’s important to deal with these negative feelings, but try to focus on the positive things in your life, too. You may want to use a journal to keep track of things that make you feel happy or peaceful. Some research has shown that having a positive outlook can improve your quality of life and give your health a boost. You may also need to find ways to let go of some things in your life that make you feel stressed and overwhelmed. Make time for things you enjoy.

Develop resilience.
People with resilience are able to cope with stress in a healthy way. Resilience can be learned and strengthened with different strategies. These include having social support, keeping a positive view of yourself, accepting change, and keeping things in perspective. A counselor or therapist can help you achieve this goal with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Ask your doctor if this is a good idea for you.

Calm your mind and body.
Relaxation methods, such as meditation, listening to music, listening to guided imagery tracks, yoga, and Tai Chi are useful ways to bring your emotions into balance. Free guided imagery videos are also available on YouTube.

Meditation is a form of guided thought. It can take many forms. For example, you may do it by exercising, stretching, or breathing deeply. Ask your family doctor for advice about relaxation methods.

Take care of yourself.
To have good emotional health, it’s important to take care of your body by having a regular routine for eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep, and exercising to relieve pent-up tension. Avoid overeating and don’t abuse drugs or alcohol. Using drugs or alcohol just causes other issues, such as family and health problems.

Things to Consider
Poor emotional health can weaken your body’s immune system. This makes you more likely to get colds and other infections during emotionally difficult times. Also, when you are feeling stressed, anxious, or upset, you may not take care of your health as well as you should. You may not feel like exercising, eating nutritious foods, or taking medicine that your doctor prescribes. You may abuse alcohol, to***co, or other drugs. Other signs of poor emotional health include:

back pain
change in appetite
chest pain
constipation or diarrhea
dry mouth
extreme tiredness
general aches and pains
headaches
high blood pressure
insomnia (trouble sleeping)
lightheadedness
palpitations (the feeling that your heart is racing)
s*xual problems
shortness of breath
stiff neck
sweating
upset stomach
weight gain or loss
Why does my doctor need to know about my emotions?
You may not be used to talking to your doctor about your feelings or problems in your personal life. But remember, he or she can’t always tell that you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or upset just by looking at you. It’s important to be honest with your doctor if you are having these feelings.

First, he or she will need to make sure that other health problems aren’t causing your physical symptoms. If your symptoms aren’t caused by other health problems, you and your doctor can address the emotional causes of your symptoms. Your doctor may suggest ways to treat your physical symptoms while you work together to improve your emotional health.

When to see a doctor
If your negative feelings don’t go away and are so strong that they keep you from enjoying life, it’s especially important for you to talk to your doctor. You may have what doctors call “major depression.” Depression is a medical illness that can be treated with individualized counseling, medicine, or both

The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise
You already know that exercise is good for your body. But did you know it’s also effective in dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, and more?
Closeup of man pausing during outdoor running session, earbuds in ears, leaning forward, chin up, looking forward intensely
What are the mental health benefits of exercise?
Exercise is not just about aerobic capacity and muscle size. Sure, exercise can improve your physical health and your physique, trim your waistline, improve your s*x life, and even add years to your life. But that’s not what motivates most people to stay active.

People who exercise regularly tend to do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have sharper memories, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. And it’s also powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges.

Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. And you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits. Research indicates that modest amounts of exercise can make a difference. No matter your age or fitness level, you can learn to use exercise as a powerful tool to feel better.

Exercise and depression
Studies show that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as antidepressant medication—but without the side-effects, of course. As one example, a recent study done by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression by 26%. In addition to relieving depression symptoms, research also shows that maintaining an exercise schedule can prevent you from relapsing.

Exercise is a powerful depression fighter for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

Exercise and anxiety
Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being through the release of endorphins. Anything that gets you moving can help, but you’ll get a bigger benefit if you pay attention instead of zoning out.

Try to notice the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, for example, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the wind on your skin. By adding this mindfulness element—really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise—you’ll not only improve your physical condition faster, but you may also be able to interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head.

Exercise and stress
Ever noticed how your body feels when you’re under stress? Your muscles may be tense, especially in your face, neck, and shoulders, leaving you with back or neck pain, or painful headaches. You may feel a tightness in your chest, a pounding pulse, or muscle cramps. You may also experience problems such as insomnia, heartburn, stomachache, diarrhea, or frequent urination. The worry and discomfort of all these physical symptoms can in turn lead to even more stress, creating a vicious cycle between your mind and body.

Exercising is an effective way to break this cycle. As well as releasing endorphins in the brain, physical activity helps to relax the muscles and relieve tension in the body. Since the body and mind are so closely linked, when your body feels better so, too, will your mind.

Exercise and ADHD
Exercising regularly is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of ADHD and improve concentration, motivation, memory, and mood. Physical activity immediately boosts the brain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels—all of which affect focus and attention. In this way, exercise works in much the same way as ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Adderall.

Exercise and PTSD and trauma
Evidence suggests that by really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise, you can actually help your nervous system become “unstuck” and begin to move out of the immobilization stress response that characterizes PTSD or trauma. Instead of allowing your mind to wander, pay close attention to the physical sensations in your joints and muscles, even your insides as your body moves. Exercises that involve cross movement and that engage both arms and legs—such as walking (especially in sand), running, swimming, weight training, or dancing—are some of your best choices.

Outdoor activities like hiking, sailing, mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and skiing (downhill and cross-country) have also been shown to reduce the symptoms of PTSD.

Other mental and emotional benefits of exercise
Sharper memory and thinking. The same endorphins that make you feel better also help you concentrate and feel mentally sharp for tasks at hand. Exercise also stimulates the growth of new brain cells and helps prevent age-related decline.

Higher self-esteem. Regular activity is an investment in your mind, body, and soul. When it becomes habit, it can foster your sense of self-worth and make you feel strong and powerful. You’ll feel better about your appearance and, by meeting even small exercise goals, you’ll feel a sense of achievement.

Better sleep. Even short bursts of exercise in the morning or afternoon can help regulate your sleep patterns. If you prefer to exercise at night, relaxing exercises such as yoga or gentle stretching can help promote sleep.

More energy. Increasing your heart rate several times a week will give you more get-up-and-go. Start off with just a few minutes of exercise per day, and increase your workout as you feel more energized.

Stronger resilience. When faced with mental or emotional challenges in life, exercise can help you cope in a healthy way, instead of resorting to alcohol, drugs, or other negative behaviors that ultimately only make your symptoms worse. Regular exercise can also help boost your immune system and reduce the impact of stress.

Overall wellness is composed of 5 individual dimensions of health. The goal is to find a good balance between all 5 dimensions, and continuously pursue symmetry between each of them. In the quest for overall wellness, strive to enhance emotional health, intellectual health, spiritual health, social health, and of course, physical health.

Emotional Health is defined as the ability to control emotions and express them appropriately and comfortably. A deficiency in emotional health can be the most detrimental of the 5 dimensions to your overall wellness. The status of a person’s emotion can either positively or negatively affect each of the other dimensions of wellness. Emotions have the power to control just about everything in life: actions, attitude, appetite, and more. Keep your emotions under control, and appropriately express positivity. Life is more enjoyable when you choose to be comfortable with everything around you.

Intellectual Health is defined as the ability to learn, grow from experience, and utilize intellectual capabilities. Things can get boring really quickly when there is nothing new about them. Redundant tasks become the catalyst for getting ‘stuck in a groove’ and losing interest in anything to do with that task. Spice things up. Learn something new and apply your new knowledge to something you find interesting. It will spark a creative revolution in the brain that won’t want to stop. It is healthy to engage in new and exciting activities or intellectual subjects. Continual growth is a huge component to keeping life from becoming mundane.

Spiritual Health is defined as a guiding sense of meaning or value in life, and may involve a belief in some unifying or universal force. The spiritual health dimension can sometimes be a controversial topic. There is an abundance of different belief systems that exist all around the world. Some may argue that there are right and wrong beliefs, but it is up to you to believe what is right for you. It is important to find one that you believe in and value as your own. Your spiritual beliefs will help you discover and pursue your own value and overall meaning in life.

Social Health is the ability to have satisfying interpersonal relationships and interactions with others. Relationships and social interactions are the foundations for maintaining interest in the other 4 dimensions of wellness. Discover people you enjoy being with and partake in social activities with them. Discuss your emotions with your significant other, have a heated debate with intellectual peers, read scripture with a religious group, or participate in physical activity with your friends. There should never be a shortage of what interests you and the relationships you have. However, if you find that there is a shortage, it is within your power to change that. Take a step out of your comfort zone. Do something you never thought you would do, talk to a stranger at the park, or take up a new hobby. You never know what may come of it.

Physical Health is defined as the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor. When most people think about ‘Wellness’, they generally only consider physical health. It is the most visible dimension of the 5, so they find it the easiest to assess. However, physical health pertains to more than what is visible from the outside. Your physical health entails disease, exercise habits, diet, bone health, body mass index… the list goes on and on. If you find that you can’t physically do something you want to do, make a change. It takes more than just wanting to do something; you have to work for it. Change your exercise habits, eat healthier food, evolve, and overcome your previous failure. Just remember that the way you treat your body is usually the way it is going to treat you back.

Take the time and effort to maintain the 5 individual dimensions of your overall health, and finally discover all the benefits that you have been waiting to offer yourself.

What is Social Health?

As a sociologist, I’ve been interested in the concept of social health. By this, I refer to the health of a social environment, including issues related to poverty or social isolation.

While mental health has been gaining attention in the recent decade, we have been neglecting the importance of social health.

Social health important since the health of a social context affects the physical and mental health of an individual. By improving the health of our communities, individuals are empowered to live healthier lives, filled with a sense of purpose and belonging.

What is Social Health?
Social health is the ability of a social context to foster interdependent social relations in a way that meets the needs of individuals and the needs of the broader group.

In order to explore what this means, let’s consider what it means to be healthy.

There are many perspectives on health: biological, psychological, and sociological.

We are familiar with the idea of physical health and mental health, but we often forget that our societies are also living organisms, in need of checkups, diagnoses, and treatment.

So what is a healthy society?

A healthy society as one that is socially integrated in a way that meets our basic physical and psychological needs, facilitating a sense of higher purpose.

This is a sociological take on Abraham Maslow’s view:

The good or healthy society would then be defined as one that permitted man’s highest purposes to emerge by satisfying all his basic needs.

For Maslow, his famous hierarchy ranks these needs from the most basic to the most advanced. I don’t necessarily agree with his strict rank ordering and a 2011 study on the topic confirms this skepticism.

Throughout my research on su***de, I’ve come to see how social needs are as important as our biological need for food. Those whose social needs are not met may find themselves at risk of dying by su***de.

Although I agree with Maslow’s broader theory of human flourishing, I prefer to draw on more recent psychological research on our basic social needs.

According to Self-determination theory, we have three basic social/psychological needs: competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

Competence consists of the sense that one has specific skills and is progressing in their abilities.

A healthy social environment provides worthy goals with clear guidelines that act as signposts to human action. Without socially sanctioned signposts regulating our actions, individuals may feel lost or purposeless. The classic sociologist, Émile Durkheim, writes:

All man’s pleasure in acting, moving and exerting himself implies the sense that his efforts are not in vain and that by walking he has advanced. However, one does not advance when one walks toward no goal, or—which is the same thing—when his goal is infinity.

Consider any worth-while goal or endeavor and you will quickly realize it is marked by the stamp of social values. Our goals are often regulated by what is deemed valuable to a particular social context.

Although we need social regulation to give us purpose and a sense of contribution, this does not mean we need to simply conform, bringing us to the next fundamental need:

Autonomy consists of feeling that one is in control of one’s own actions.

In sociological terms this means social regulations are not overbearing and fatalistic. Although autonomy is important, too much of it can produce individualistic social contexts where individuals no longer feel connected to a broader community. This brings us to the last fundamental need:

Relatedness consists of the sense that one can depend on a close circle of other individuals.

In his classic sociological text, Su***de, Durkheim states:

“…when community becomes foreign to the individual, he becomes a mystery to himself, unable to escape the exasperating and agonizing question: to what purpose?”

Interdependence is the key to a healthy social context that balances individual needs with the needs of the group.

Interdependence requires goal alignment between the individual and the group. As stated in my article addressing the question, “What is a healthy identity?“:

…the military is a great example of institutionalized interdependence. Identities are built within a system of distinct, yet related, roles where one’s unique skills, abilities, preferences, and character, all contribute to an organization with functional capacities beyond the sum of its individual .

We forget we are all in the same boat. Although we are individuals, social forces affect us all.

Interdependence works on many levels: organizationally, nationally, and globally.

Healthy societies are like living organisms, institutions and organizations are the organs, and individuals are the cells that compose the organs.

Societies interact with other societies, just as our bodies interact with other bodies; organizations interact with other organizations, just as our bodily organs interact; and individuals interact with other individuals, just as our cells interact.

Social health consists of a world of interdependent social relations. It is a world where social environments facilitate individual flourishing. A world where economies work to fulfill human needs, rather than a world where human needs are sidelined at the expense of economies.

The Law of Spiritual Approach

Read about the Principle of Essential Divinity,
ensouling the Law of Spiritual Approach.

The word "spiritual" covers every phase of living experience. That which is spiritual lies beyond the present point of achievement, embodies the vision, and urges and impels the individual on toward a further goal.

The Tibetan advises disciples to "... regard all your work as group work, causing effects which are inevitable and contributing to the potency of the group thoughtform." (1)

Key Thoughts on Spiritual Approach and the Full Moon Festivals

The Law of Spiritual Approach governs all approaches ~ between Humanity and Hierarchy, between Hierarchy and Shamballa, and between Shamballa and higher centers of even greater power and light.

At first, human consciousness only dimly sensed the presence of the Divine. As each descent of Divine energy is registered by Humanity through world teachers and saviors, a clearer understanding of the Divine Purpose is given.

The Law of Spiritual Approach is reciprocal. As Humanity endeavors to do its very best to reach and commune with the Hierarchy, Hierarchy is also working to impress upon us our next step on the Lighted Way. As Humanity strives to understand and tread upon the Path to God, the individual effort or approach must give way to the blended approach of group endeavor.

This law is the basis for full moon work, which is a spiritual approach and a group endeavor. In this work we unitedly reach the highest point, to meet the incoming Divine influences.
.. at the time of the full moon ~ it is almost as if the door is suddenly opened wide, which at other times stands as closed. Through that door, ingress is possible; through that door or opening, energies can be contacted which are otherwise shut off; and through that door approaches can be made to the planetary Hierarchy and to reality which are at other times not possible. (2)

The Great Approaches

Two major approaches of the divine toward humanity lie in the distant past. The Approach of Individuation brought the appearance of the human soul, and humanity emerged on the scene ~ adding a fourth kingdom to the three already existing of animal, plant, and mineral.

The second great Approach took place when the Spiritual Hierarchy of our planet drew nearer to humanity, thus opening the spiritual Way to God for those who could consciously set foot on this higher Way, demonstrating the Christ Spirit within, and who earnestly sought enlightenment. Christ's words, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free," (3) provided the urge of the truly seeking disciple to move forward into greater light and service through the gate of initiation.

It was at the time of this second Approach that the fact of the existence of the Spiritual Hierarchy, of the open door to initiation, and of the Way of Sacrifice ~ of personality self interest, self orientation, and self service ~ first dawned on the human consciousness. From that event on, individuals and groups have found the Way and have moved out of the human kingdom (the fourth) into the spiritual (fifth) kingdom. They have transformed their human consciousness into spiritual awareness. They have found their place within the Hierarchy. The kingdom of humanity and the kingdom of God have been brought into closer relationship.

The third great Approach became possible after the end of the second World War. Through the experiences of the war, humanity had (at the end of the war and during the period preceding it) been prepared to participate in this Approach. This process continues today in the events of the present time.

The Buddha presented the method of approach: Detachment, Dispassion, Discrimination. The Christ presents the result: Individuation, Initiation, Identification. A third triad finds its place in these approaches: Pe*******on, Polarization, Precipitation.

Through Avatars, God, the Emanator, Originator, Creator ~ whatever term we may choose in order to identify that great Source of all that exists ~ periodically makes this dramatic Approach to humanity.

Humanity invokes the divine approaches in two ways: by means of the unorganized, voiceless appeal ~ the "invocative cry" of the unawakened members of humanity ~ and by the conscious, planned, aware invocative appeal of the spiritually-oriented aspirants ~ the intelligently convinced worker, the disciple and initiate ~ by all who form the New Group of World Servers.

As humanity participates in this next Approach we now come to accept certain premises:

• The fact of God Transcendent
• Humanity's relation to the divine or to God Immanent
• The fact of immortality
• The kinship of humanity (or God in expression)
• The existence of the Way to God
• The historicity of the two great Approaches, with the sensing of a third and immanent Approach now in progress.

A very difficult interlude is taking place in today's world. Humanity as a whole is undergoing a process similar to that which takes place in the life of the individual. Aware of turmoil and difficult conditions, but also aware of moments of high contact and spiritual revelation and of "divine impulsations," the World Soul is preparing to taking hold of the world situation. Indeed, such interludes occur frequently in the life of individuals.

Energies of Aquarius, as well as from the stars Sirius and Betelgeuse, are pouring in ~ affecting the consciousness of humanity and the planet. Venusian energies of great potency are currently impacting the planet as well. Disciples in the ranks of the New Group of World Servers are responding. This produces a reaction in the heart and head centers. A secondary effect is said to fall on the mineral kingdom and therefore onto gold and on to that concretized energy ~ money ~ engrossing the world consciousness today.

The united Hierarchy has also made another of its great Approaches to the physical plane (in 2000, we are told). This has stimulated the higher centers of all those who have made contact with their own souls. The creative energies of all disciples and people of goodwill, working in the outer world, who register both the crisis of world need and the approaching energies which can help meet that need, are necessary if the two are to meet and fuse.
.. we begin and we end with an expansion of consciousness. The first one led to an inclusion of the material world, and the second one includes or appropriates, consciously and intelligently, the spiritual world. We see the desire consciousness transmuted into aspiration for the spiritual realities and the focused, vital approach to the kingdom of God. We see the appearance on the physical plane of the imprisoned consciousness, limited and confined for purposes of defined, intelligent development within an evolving form, and the final emergence upon the mental plane of the enriched, released consciousness into the full freedom of the Mind of God. We see the activity of the conscious mind of man slowly expanding and intensifying, until it becomes the activity of the illumined mind, reflecting the divine consciousness of the soul. We see the ambition of the conscious man transformed at first into the spiritual ambition of the pledged disciple and finally into the expression of the Will of God or of the Monad, in the initiate. (4)

Throughout these great Approaches the interplay between the Life energy of Monadic Being and the expression of that energy as force, through the initiates, disciples, aspirants, and people of goodwill, is very evident. It is the pull from above of that Source of all life and expression, together with the urge from below of the increasingly soul-infused personalities of men and women in human form that make all approaches ~ vertical, horizontal, and oblique ~ so vital to the Path toward Oneness, Wholeness, and Synthesis.

As with all the Principles and Laws, it is the living Life Force that impels the Law of Spiritual Approach into expression. Governing all approaches, demonstration of this Law draw these three centers ~ humanity, Hierarchy, and Shamballa ~ ever closer, thus strengthening the current of Light and Energy which links all three centers in a vital cooperative effort for the Good-of-the-Whole.

The Path to God

Therefore be full of Joy, O pilgrim on the Way towards enlightened Being ... Naught disappears but pain. Nothing remains but bliss ~ the bliss of knowledge true, of contact real, of light divine, the Way to God.
- The Old Commentary (5)

Awareness of the fact of the Path to God "... has been preserved for us down the ages by those who knew God and whom the world called mystics, occultists and saints .... The history of the human soul is the history of the search for that Way and its discovery by the persistent." (6)

Throughout the endless reaches of time, individuals have found the Path to God. They have followed this path and accepted its conditions and its disciplines. Confident of its reality, they have experienced its rewards and have penetrated thereby into the worlds of meaning and wholeness.

Dimly sensed by human consciousness is the response of the Divine, and the cyclic descent of divine energy into the world of form. The great world teachers and saviors down through the centuries have been the symbol and guarantee of this response. Each time this descent of the divine has occurred, a clearer understanding of divine purpose has been given, a new and fresh revelation was perceived, and a new expression of religion emerged with corresponding changes in culture and civilization.

The descent of energy brings with it certain active interpreters and agents as well as new "seeds of hope" for the future, and certain new inspirations. These new energies in turn evoke reaction and obstructing forces which must be handled and transmuted.

Entrance upon the Path of Upward Approach is possible for individuals, groups, and for humanity as the greater Group. Individual approach must now be blended with a group approach, and the approach of groups will someday be superceded by an organized approach of humanity as a whole.

Energies not usually contacted can be touched, grasped, and utilized at the time of such approaches, provided that these are contacted, touched, and assimilated in group formation. In this way the individual, the group, and humanity are all vitalized.
