👶👁️ Protect Your Child’s Vision from the Start

A child’s vision plays a vital role in their learning, development, and overall confidence. Many vision problems in children go unnoticed because kids may not realize what “clear vision” truly looks like.

🔍 Why pediatric eye checkups are important:
• Early detection of conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia), squint (strabismus), and refractive errors
• Supports better academic performance and concentration 📚
• Helps in proper eye–hand coordination and overall development
• Prevents long-term vision complications

⏰ When should you get your child’s eyes checked?
• First screening: Around 6 months
• Before starting school
• Regular checkups every 1–2 years or as advised

⚠️ Watch for these signs:
• Squinting or frequent eye rubbing
• Sitting too close to screens or books
• Head tilting or difficulty focusing
• Complaints of headaches or blurred vision

💙 Early care ensures a lifetime of clear vision. Don’t wait—schedule your child’s comprehensive eye checkup today!

Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO), commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterized by a unilateral painful skin rash in one or more dermatome distributions of the fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve), shared by the eye and ocular adnexa.

It occurs when reactivation of the latent virus (varicella-zoster) in the trigeminal ganglia involves the ophthalmic division of the nerve. The virus damages the eye and surrounding structures by secondary perineural and intraneural inflammation of sensory nerves.

Signs:
-Cutaneous lesions:
unilateral painful, red, vesicular rash on the forehead and upper eyelid, progressing to crusting after 2-3 weeks; resolution often involves scarring.

periorbital oedema (may close the eyelids and spread to opposite side)

lymphadenopathy (swollen regional lymph nodes)

-Ocular lesions:
Conjunctivitis
Zoster keratitis
Iridocyclitis
Retinal necrosis
Secondary glaucoma
Phisis bulbi

Treatment:
Systemic therapy
Local therapy

-usually treated with orally administered acyclovir. Other antiviral medications include famciclovir and valacyclovir. The antiviral medications are most effective when started within 72 hours after the onset of the rash.

-other secondary treatments:
Analgesics
Steroids
Anti-histamines
Anti-glaucoma

Aniridia is an eye disorder characterized by a complete or partial absence of the colored part of the eye (the iris). It is usually bilateral.

Cause: It is caused by mutations in the PAX6 gene. The PAX6 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is involved in the early development of the eyes, brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), and the pancreas. It could be traumatic also.

Symptoms:
Poor vision (not always present).
More sensitivity to light (photophobia)
Eye movements that can't be controlled (nystagmus).
Eyes don't line up (strabismus).

Treatment:
No cure of it but generally vision is improved and preserved with the prosthetic contact lenses.
