🛑 Topical steroids are creams , ointments , lotions that are usually prescribed by dermatologists to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, lichen planus, etc.,

🛑 Topical steroids can be used for a short course of time as prescribed by dermatologists and then stopped.
If used correctly in optimum amounts as prescribed by your doctors , there will be no side-effects.

🛑 However, long term use of topical steroids like skin lightening/ brightening creams , pearl whitening creams, advised by your beauticians, friends, family, local pharmacists and RMPs who are not specialised to treat skin conditions can cause irreversible damage to your skin

🛑 Some of the common signs of topical steroid abuse are

1. Thinning of skin with spidery blood vessels
2. Increased hair growth
3. Acne eruptions
4. Sun sensitivity
5. Permanent stretch marks ( striae)
6. Change in skin tone ( lightening or darkening)

🛑 Be aware of the harmful side effects by the inadvertent use of the whitening creams and please consult near by dermatologists if you or your friends have signs of these.

How to pick the best sunscreen for you :

First rule of thumb always choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher , and if you have sun allergies or sensitivity , use a higher SPF or mineral sunscreen . Remember to apply the sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours if you spend a considerable amount of time outside.

👉Sunscreen are of two types : Physical sunscreen - that reflects and scatters UV rays - common ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
Chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays and then releasing them . Octinoxate , avobenzone, and, oxybenzone are the ingredients to look for in a chemical sunscreen .

👉With that in mind , if you have oily , acne-prone or sensitive skin , look out for non- comedogenic , gel sunscreens . Mineral sunscreens having zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are best tolerated by those with sensitive skin.

👉If your dermatologist has put you on acne medications like retinoids or tetracyclines, that can dry your skin and increase sensitivity to sun, it’s best to step up your sunscreen with a higher SPF to protect your skin. Avoid going out and playing outside when the UV rays are intense at the mid-afternoon

👉If you have dry skin , choose a sunscreen with hyaluronic acid or ceramides . If you prefer to use a separate moisturizer and sunscreen , give a 5 minutes gap following moisturiser application and then apply sunscreen

👉If you have darker skin tone, go for a tinted sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast

❌Sunscreen Sprays, mists , sticks and powder should never be used a first coat of sunscreen application during the daytime .
✔️ Prefer to use the above when you want to reapply the sunsreen , and when out for a quick fix.

Vitamin C is a very versatile ingredient , with antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties

In order to receive the complete benefits of this compound, let’s debunk some of the myths circulated around vitamin C

Myths about Vitamin C that you shouldn’t believe

Myth #1 - All Vitamin C are the same

Fact- L- Ascorbic acid , ascorbyl glycoside, ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate etc., are some forms of vitamin C that are seen in cosmetic formulations

Myth #2 - Vitamin C is not for sensitive skin

Fact- Vitamin C is suitable for all the skin types, if you choose the right type of vitamin C for you.

Always look for a vitamin C derivative - ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate or THD ascorbate that are lipid soluble, and less acidic in your cosmetics if your skin is sensitive

Myth #3 - vitamin C can cause sun sensitivity

Fact- Pure form of vitamin C - L Ascorbic acid is acidic, making most people believe that it’s not an apt product during the daytime.
Vitamin C can protect your skin against the environmental free radicals, and pairing it up with your sunscreen has synergistic effect.

5 ingredients to avoid in Rosacea 👇👇

1- Retinoids are the one of the commonest drugs to treat acne , and pustules in Rosacea .However, you have to be extra-cautious and avoid this ingredient (eg., retinol, tretinoin, adapalene .. ) when you have sensitive skin and redness

2- Benzoyl peroxide is another key ingredient in anti-acne medications, as it helps to kills the bacteria (P. Acnes ) producing acne . Using benzoyl peroxide on the dry ,irritated red skin of rosacea might further irritate the skin and increase the sensitivity.

3- Glycolic acid

The most popular Alpha-hydroxy acid used in serums, daily face washes, glycolic acid - a derivative of sugarcane, should be completely avoided by the rosacea individuals

4- Witch hazel

Witch hazel toners can be purchased as an OTC product , but using witch hazel can cause an allergic reaction , and further aggravating the symptoms of rosacea

5- Menthol, eucalyptus oil, peppermint

If you like the refreshing, cool sensation after washing or applying any toner or face wash , watch out ! It’s because of the menthol, pepper mint or eucalyptus oil in the products. Go for a better alternative for experiencing a refreshing feel , as dermatologists recommend the above mentioned ingredients.

If you want a healthy looking radiant skin , exfoliation should be a part of your skin care regime

When it comes to getting rid of dead skin cells , you need not opt for physical exfoliation but a supervised chemical exfoliation by your dermatologist

In the process of chemical exfoliation, AHAs and BHAs are the most sought out by many health care practitioners

While AHAs are best suited for tanned, dehydrated and pigmented skin, BHAs are suitable for acne prone , oily skin.

Most of the serums, OTC products contain these exfoliants at a minimal concentration for weekly or daily use

Chemical exfoliation twice in a month under close supervision by your dermatologist is best for a healthy, glowing skin.

To know more about the exfoliation frequency , whether AHA or BHA are suited for your skin, please visit us clinic or DM us.

Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-pigmentation properties.

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, which can be used in various formulations or a stand-alone active ingredient for sensitive skin.

It increases the production of ceramides and improves the skin barrier, so it can be best combined with your night time retinol serums or creams

For individuals with angry, inflamed skin, niacinamide aka vitamin B3 can be used as a anti-inflammatory agent

Niacinamide can be used as a serum in a concentration of 5 to 10 percent.

Dr. Meena recommends niacinamide for dry, oily and sensitive skin types in the morning or night routine

It can be combined with your retinol, hyaluronic acid and salicylic acid serums.

For more info on when to use niacinamide, please book a consultation with Dr. Meena👉 Consult your dermatologist today, for the best treatment approach and prescription medicines!

22/03/2023

Melasma, also known as “butterfly rash” or “chloasma” is a pigmentary condition.

It usually appears as light to dark brown patches with ill-defined borders, that can aggravate due to sun exposure.

Common causes - genetics, sun exposure, artificial light, hormones, pregnancy, thyroid, vitamin B12and iron deficiencies.

As sun exposure and artificial light are the major triggering factors in melasma, sunscreen application becomes a crucial part of the prevention and reduction of melasma.

How to choose your sunscreen for melasma?

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF mostly protects you against the UVA and UVB rays that are responsible for premature aging, and tanning of the skin.

Along with the UV rays, Visible light from sunlight, emitted from laptop/desktop screens, lights and cooking heat has a role to play in increasing the pigmentation in dark-skinned individuals.
To tackle this issue, mineral sunscreens formulated with zinc and titanium dioxide along with iron oxides that gives a tinted effect can protect your skin from visible light.
Always use tinted sunscreen if you have melasma for extra protection and prevention.👉 Consult your dermatologist today, for the best treatment approach and prescription medicines!
