Gut Health: Why It Actually Matters

(By Dr. Sachin Wani
Gastrointestinal Surgeon, Specialist in Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery.)

When people hear 'gut health, ' they often think of simple digestion or the occasional bout of bloating. But as a gastrointestinal surgeon , I see firsthand that your gut is much more than a processing plant for food—it is the command center for your overall well-being.
In my practice here in Thane for more than 20 years now, whether I’m performing a routine check-up or a complex robotic surgery, I always emphasize that a healthy gut is the foundation of a healthy life.
Why Your Gut is Your 'Second Brain'
The gastrointestinal system is home to trillions of bacteria, known as the gut microbiome. This ecosystem is responsible for far more than just breaking down your Pav Bhaji; it influences:
* Immune Strength: Roughly 70-80% of your immune system resides in your gut. A balanced gut helps you fight off infections more effectively.
* Mental Clarity: Through the 'gut-brain axis, ' your digestive system produces neurotransmitters like serotonin. If your gut is inflamed, your mood and focus often follow suit.
* Disease Prevention: Chronic gut issues, if left unaddressed, can lead to more serious conditions like GERD (acid reflux), gallstones, or even colorectal malignancies.

You don’t always need surgery to fix your digestion. Small, consistent changes make the biggest difference:
* Don’t Ignore the 'Red Flags': Persistent bloating, acidity, or changes in bowel habits shouldn't be ignored. Early intervention is the hallmark of minimally invasive care.
A Note from HealWell Speciality Clinic:
-Your gut health is a reflection of your lifestyle. If you've been struggling with chronic digestive discomfort, it’s time to listen to what your body is telling you. Modern, minimally invasive solutions can often resolve issues before they require major intervention.
Stay Healthy, Stay Informed..

What to Eat After Abdominal Surgery?

Recovering from abdominal surgery? Your diet plays a crucial role in healing and getting back on your feet!
As a gastrointestinal surgeon in Thane, I, Dr. Sachin Wani, often get asked - 'What should I eat after surgery?' Here’s a quick guide:
- Start with liquids: Clear broths, electrolyte drinks, and water to ease digestion.
- Gradually add soft foods: Pureed veggies, soups, yogurt, and mashed bananas.
- Avoid heavy, spicy, or oily foods: These can irritate your stomach and slow healing.
- Small, frequent meals: Opt for 5-6 small meals a day to ease digestion.
- Follow your doctor’s advice: Your surgeon knows best about your specific needs!

Colorectal Cancer: Why 45 is the New 50

At Healwell Speciality Clinic, we believe that awareness is the first step toward prevention. For decades, 50 was considered the starting age for colorectal cancer screening. But with rising cases in younger adults, the latest international guidelines now recommend beginning routine screening at age 45.
Dr. Sachin Wani, leading Robotic Gastrointestinal Surgeon in Thane highlights how this shift can save lives by catching cancer earlier and improving treatment outcomes.
What’s Changed in the Guidelines?
-Screening age lowered to 45: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and other global bodies now recommend starting at 45 instead of 50, due to increasing incidence in the 40–49 age group.
- Colonoscopy remains the gold standard: It allows direct visualization and removal of precancerous lesions.
- Better outcomes with early detection: Studies show more pre-cancerous polyps are found in younger adults, reducing progression to advanced cancer.
The Robotic Edge in Treatment
-Enhanced Precision: Robotic surgery ensures delicate removal of cancerous tissue while preserving healthy structures.
- Faster Recovery: Smaller incisions, less pain, and quicker return to daily life.
- Improved Outcomes: Advanced technology translates into safer, more effective gastrointestinal cancer care.
Dr. Wani’s message: “Lowering the screening age is not just a guideline change—it’s a wake-up call. With robotic precision, we can offer patients confidence that their fight against colorectal cancer is met with the best surgical care available.”
At Healwell Speciality Clinic, Thane, we combine innovation, compassion, and expertise to redefine cancer care.
If you’re 45 or older, talk to your doctor about colorectal cancer screening today. For more info visit us at http://www.healwellspeciality.in/latest-update/colorectal-cancer-why-45-is-the-new-50/204?utm_source=facebookpage

"Just a Viral Cold" or Something More? A Guide to Throat Infections by HealWell’s ENT Specialist

Living in a bustling city like Thane, we often blame our scratchy throats on the changing weather, pollution, or that extra glass of cold water. But as an ENT specialist, we see many patients at HealWell Speciality Clinic who wait too long, turning a simple infection into a painful complication.
Not all sore throats are created equal. Here is how to tell if your throat needs professional medical attention.
The Red Flags: Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
While a mild tickle might resolve with rest, these symptoms are signs that an infection (viral or bacterial) has taken hold:
Painful Swallowing (Odynophagia): If even drinking water feels like swallowing glass, your throat lining is severely inflamed.
White Patches on Tonsils: Visible white or yellow spots are often a sign of Strep Throat or bacterial tonsillitis—conditions that require specific antibiotics.
'Hot Potato' Voice: Does your voice sound muffled, as if you’re speaking with a hot object in your mouth? This can indicate a peritonsillar abscess (a collection of pus).
Swollen Neck Glands: Tender lumps under your jawline mean your immune system is working overtime to fight an infection.
Referred Ear Pain: Because the nerves in the throat and ears are connected, a deep throat infection often feels like a sharp earache.
When to See an ENT Specialist in Thane?
Most viral infections settle in 3–5 days. However, you should book an appointment at HealWell if:
Your sore throat lasts longer than a week.
You have a persistent high fever (above 101°F).
You experience difficulty breathing or opening your mouth fully.
You have recurrent infections (getting a sore throat every few months).
Specialist Tip: Avoid self-medicating with over-the-counter antibiotics. This can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections much harder to treat.
Experience Expert Care at HealWell.
Don't let a sore throat quiet your voice. Visit us today for a healing touch.. For more info visit us at http://www.healwellspeciality.in/latest-update/just-a-viral-cold-or-something-more-a-guide-to-throat-infections-by-healwell-s-ent-specialist/203?utm_source=facebookpage

Cervical Cancer: Prevention is better than cure

Patients often feel overwhelmed by cancer statistics. But here is the good news: Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer—provided we use the tools science has given us.
Protecting yourself comes down to two powerful pillars: Prevention (The HPV Vaccine) and Early Detection (The Pap Smear).
1. The Shield: HPV Vaccination
Most cervical cancers are caused by high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccine works like a biological shield, training your immune system to block these strains before they can cause cellular damage.
* Who should get it? Ideally, girls and boys between ages 9 and 14 (when the immune response is strongest).
* Catch-up? Yes! It is highly recommended for everyone up to age 26.
* **Adults (27–45): You can still benefit! If you weren’t vaccinated earlier, talk to us. We can decide together if the vaccine is right for you based on your risk factors.
2. The Safety Net: Pap Smears & HPV Testing
Even if you are vaccinated, regular screening is vital. A Pap Smear is a quick, simple procedure where we collect a few cells from the cervix to look for changes before they even become cancer.
* Age 21–29: You should have a Pap test every 3 years.
* Age 30–65: The gold standard is now Co-testing (Pap + HPV test) every 5 years, or a Pap test alone every 3 years.
* Why it matters: Cervical cancer develops slowly. Regular screening allows us to catch 'precancerous' cells and treat them easily, often avoiding surgery or intensive treatment entirely.
A Doctor’s Note to You 🩺
Many women avoid these tests out of fear or embarrassment. At HealWell, we prioritize your comfort. A 10-minute appointment once every few years is a small price to pay for a lifetime of peace of mind.
Don't wait for symptoms. Cervical precancer usually has none. Take charge of your health today.
Would you like to create a personalized screening schedule based on your age and health history?. For more info visit us at http://www.healwellspeciality.in/latest-update/cervical-cancer-prevention-is-better-than-cure/202?utm_source=facebookpage
