World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on 28th July to mark the birthday of the Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the Hepatitis B virus and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. Hepatitis can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, or even death in liver transplant and HIV patients. Let us spread awareness for the early diagnosis and treatment of this deadly disease, on this day!

Overview

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and is commonly caused by infection from one of the five Hepatitis viruses named A to E. Hepatitis D virus is responsible for Hepatitis D infection, also called โ€˜delta hepatitisโ€™. Hepatitis D can occur only if a person is infected with Hepatitis B. Globally, HDV affects almost 5% of people with chronic HBV infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually occur 2 to 8 weeks after exposure to the virus.

โ— Fever

โ— Fatigue

โ— Loss of appetite

โ— Abdominal pain

โ— Nausea

โ— Vomiting

โ— Dark-coloured urine and stools

โ— Jaundice

โ— Joint pain

Transmission Control

Individuals suffering from chronic HBV infection and liver transplant patients are at high risk of infection. Transmission occurs by contact with infected blood or other body fluids, sexual contact, or needle-stick injuries. Rarely, an infected mother can pass the virus to the infants via the placenta.

Why do you need to get tested?

All types of hepatitis virus infections may share similarities in symptoms and hence, need to be diagnosed precisely. Hepatitis B infection may turn severe due to coinfection with Hepatitis Molecular diagnostic testing will help in the rapid and accurate detection of HDV. Advanced immunoassays can detect the presence of antibodies in response to several HDV antigens, which helps to detect recent or past infections by the virus.

Overview

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and is commonly caused by infection from one of the five Hepatitis viruses named from A to E. Hepatitis C virus is responsible for Hepatitis C infection. More than half of the people suffering from Hepatitis C develop a chronic infection. It may lead to further complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. As of 2015, approximately 59 thousand deaths have occurred due to Hepatitis C infection in India.

Symptoms

Symptoms generally occur 2 weeks to 6 months after exposure to the virus.

โ— Fever

โ— Fatigue

โ— Loss of appetite

โ— Abdominal pain

โ— Nausea

โ— Vomiting

โ— Dark-coloured urine and stools

โ— Jaundice

โ— Joint pain

Transmission Control

Individuals suffering from HIV infection and liver transplant patients are at high risk of infection. Transmission occurs by contact with infected blood, sexual contact, needle-stick injuries, tattoos or body piercings. An infected mother can pass the virus to the infants via the placenta. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for Hepatitis C infection.

Why do you need to get tested?

All types of hepatitis virus infections may share similarities in symptoms and hence, need to be diagnosed precisely. Chronic hepatitis may be asymptomatic at times and hence, may be overlooked. For formulation of effective treatment strategies, molecular diagnostic testing and immunoassays will help in the rapid detection of HCV.

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, caused by one of the five Hepatitis viruses A to E. Hepatitis B virus is responsible for Hepatitis B infection. Individuals with severe infections may develop chronic illnesses. It may lead to further complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. Liver transplant patients are highly susceptible to HBV infection. As of 2015, more than 0.2 million deaths have occurred due to Hepatitis B infection in India.

Symptoms
Symptoms generally occur 1 to 2 months after exposure to the virus.
โ— Fever
โ— Fatigue
โ— Loss of appetite
โ— Abdominal, joint pain
โ— Nausea
โ— Vomiting
โ— Dark-coloured urine and stools
โ— Jaundice
Severe infection may lead to fulminant hepatitis in certain cases.

Transmission Control
Transmission mainly occurs through contact with blood or other body secretions of an infected individual or through liver transplantation. However, transmission may also occur through sexual contact, needle-stick injuries, tattoos, or body piercings. An infected mother can pass the virus to the infants via the placenta. The Hepatitis B vaccine can be used to prevent infection.

Why do you need to get tested?
All types of hepatitis virus infections may share similarities in symptoms and hence, need to be diagnosed precisely. Infection can be severe for liver transplant patients and may even lead to death if not diagnosed early. Also, Hepatitis B infection may turn severe due to coinfection with Hepatitis D. Such cases need to be diagnosed carefully.

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and is commonly caused by infection from one of the five Hepatitis viruses named A to E. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), commonly seen in children. Hepatitis A usually does not become chronic. However, individuals suffering from chronic liver disease or HIV infection are at higher risk of severe infection.

Symptoms
Symptoms generally occur 28 to 30 days after exposure to the virus.
โ— Abdominal pain
โ— Jaundice
โ— Low-grade fever
โ— Fatigue
โ— Loss of appetite
โ— Nausea and vomiting
โ— Diarrhea
โ— Dark-colored urine and stools
โ— Headache, Joint pain

Transmission Control
HAV is mainly transmitted through the faecal-oral route i.e. through contaminated food or water. Transmission may also occur through sexual or close contact with an infected person. Maintenance of good personal hygiene and vaccination helps in preventing infection.

Why do you need to get tested?
All types of hepatitis virus infections may cause similar symptoms but can affect the liver in different ways. Molecular diagnostic testing will help in the rapid and accurate detection of HAV in such cases. Advanced immunoassays can detect the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies in response to HAV antigen, which helps to detect recent or past infections by the virus.
