Iyengar Yogalaya - Thane We aim to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information and news for the community about the practice and teachings of Yoga in Thane.

In the Iyengar system, special focus is placed on alignment, timing, and sequencing. Alignment of the bones and joints leads to better balance with less work of the muscles. In this way we gain more stability in the asanas with less effort. Proper alignment improves circulation, creates inner space (literally in the joints), and brings a balanced flow of energy through the whole body, which leads to health and well being. Attention to alignment in yoga is much more than making a list of points to remember while performing asanas. It is about developing a body awareness that reaches into all aspects of life. Longer timing in the poses builds stamina, allowing tight muscles to lengthen and relax, and the benefits penetrate deeper into organic and mental levels. The sequence of the poses taught provides the student with increased awareness of the physical, mental, and emotional changes, which occur during the practice. Vitality, balance and coordination are all enhanced. Only after many years of practice, study, and training do teachers become certified Iyengar Yoga instructors. Teachers can individualize poses to each person's physical needs by utilizing props, such as blankets, belts, chairs, blocks, and rope wall . Iyengar Yoga is meditation in action; practising the postures with awareness has an integrating effect and works to harmonise mind and body. As practice continues, a student's ability to relax and concentrate generally improves markedly.

"In the beginning all of us are motivated to get rid of physical or emotional problems. Why do we continue to practice when we get relief from these? Is it just to tone the body or tune the mind?

Ultimate aim of is to have the sight of the soul where the seeker becomes one with the seer. Can we transform our lower to higher ones as we tone our bodies? Self-realization is an automatic process.

We normally practice as doers. When we begin to see and observe while doing then we may change our attitudes and see something hidden expressing as an art. This becomes a source for transformation from the physical and mental towards the spiritual. Asanas are performed according to the pliability of the body. This gives one the idea that this is my capacity. Here mental mobility is required and such an attitude has to be replaced by will- power, so that the mind can be extended beyond its limited operation. The will-power has to be followed by action so that the barriers of both body and mind are broken in order to proceed further. Everyday practice has to be accompanied by a spirit of research so that the intellect can pe*****te deeper and deeper.

Always there is a tug-of-war between the body and mind while performing an asana. Sometimes the body is elastic but the mind rigid and at other times the mind is more elastic but the body remains stiff and unenthusiastic . Whichever is the dull one should be activated with concentration and attention . Laziness and lethargy are arch-enemies of Yoga while cheerfulness and enthusiasm are the friends that elevate the practitioner.
