πŸ’₯ConsistencyπŸ’₯
-
πŸ‘πŸΌ Thanks to who originally shared this quote, which is something that I find myself talking about with my patients and clients daily!
-
🚨 Here's the UNSEXY truth about physical therapy, rehab, fitness, performance, etc:
-
➑️ Long Term RESULTS require Long Term PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY!
-
❌ If you don't put in the work CONSISTENTLY for days, weeks, months, and sometimes even years at a time, you CANNOT expect optimal results
-
😬 I know it's not easy, and many times it can be downright boring (especially with rehab!), but you'll get the most out it when you stick with it day in and day out for the long haul
-
πŸ’― In fact, most rehab and fitness plans need AT LEAST 2-3 months of consistent work to yield significant improvements
-
πŸ€” So when I hear a patient/client complain that their training or rehab program "isn't working" or "didn't work", one of the first things I always ask is how consistent they really were in the first place, as well as how closely they followed the directions of the plan as it was presented to them
-
πŸ˜‘ Majority of the time, either they weren't PATIENT enough for long term adaption to occur (they wanted the results too quickly with unrealistic expectations), or they lacked enough CONSISTENCY with their program in order for it to provide the changes/improvements that they were looking for
-
πŸ’₯ So if you've been guilty of this in the past, make sure that the next time you feel that your fitness, training, or rehab program doesn't seem to be giving you the results you want, first make sure that your EXPECTATIONS are REALISTIC (you may need to speak more with your trainer, coach, or rehab professional about this) and then make sure that you truly have been CONSISTENT with it!
-
πŸ™πŸΌ I hope this was helpful!

πŸ’₯Pain and RehabπŸ’₯
-
Nobody likes to be in pain.
-
It sucks.
-
Many of you have sought out the help of a physical therapist or other movement professional to better manage your pain so that you can get back to the activities you enjoy
-
So, naturally, you might assume that your rehab should consist of "pain-free" exercises that make you feel better during and after you do them
-
Although this CAN be the case at times, much of effective rehab requires you to deal with some discomfort and sometimes even pain in order to achieve the results you're looking for in the LONG TERM
-
If you're unaware of this and avoid any and all signs and/or symptoms of pain, you may not achieve the results you're looking for (a good physical therapist should be able to help you navigate what IS and ISN'T okay or expected when it comes to pain)
-
Although this may be confusing, you have to first understand that pain itself is confusing and complex
-
People can have extreme pain WITHOUT any clear sign of tissue injury
-
And people can also have no pain WITH obvious signs of tissue injury
-
Pain is also influenced by more than just physical stresses to the body...
-
Things like fear of further injury, a poor understanding of what pain means (it doesn't mean you're damaging anything worse), negative emotions, poor sleep/recovery, and even poor diet can influence how sensitive our body is as a whole (meaning our body may experience pain much more readily as a result)
-
When it comes to rehab, many times it's more than appropriate to "push into the pain" in small, tolerable amounts in order to desensitize the body or body area so that it can tolerate more and more stressors in the future
-
For example, in tendon rehab we want to load/stress the tendons gradually in order to build up more tensile strength and tolerance to load over time...in this case we have to be okay with experiencing some pain as what causes the pain (more load on the tendon) also allows it to adapt and improve if given in the appropriate dose and over a long enough time period!
-
There are other examples, but I hope this helps illustrate why pain does not always need to be avoided at all costs when it comes to rehab!

πŸ’₯Your Body is NOT a CarπŸ’₯
-
πŸ€• If you've been around the rehab setting long enough, you've probably heard terms such as "wear and tear", "breaking down", needing a "tune up" etc
-
πŸš™ You've probably also heard plenty of comparisons between a car and your body
-
Things such as:
-
πŸ—£οΈ "Just like tires on a car, your joints will wear down if they aren't properly aligned"
-
πŸ—£οΈ "When you put so many miles on your body, it's only a matter of time before things begin to break down"
-
☝🏼 Now, don't get me wrong, there are some ways in which comparing aspects of a car (such as shock absorption, an overactive alarm system, "improving your brakes", acceleration, re-fueling etc) can be used as helpful analogies when providing explanations or reasoning to clients/patients
-
🚨 However, a key difference between human beings (a living organism) and cars (a machine), is that WE CAN ADAPT to the stresses placed upon us and become MORE RESILIENT as a result
-
❌ Cars CANNOT do this...they will break down over time after they have accumulated enough stress
-
βœ… When the body is subjected to stress and given the right conditions for recovery, it gets better at responding to that stress over time
-
IT ADAPTS
-
It gets STRONGER
-
πŸ› οΈ Cars can ONLY break down over time until their parts are replaced
-
πŸ§“πŸΌ Of course we all age, and eventually the body shuts down (hopefully after a long and fulfilling life!), but it ALWAYS has the ability to ADAPT and improve AT ANY AGE
-
πŸ’₯ And that is KEY to understanding and appreciating at any age whether your are recovering from an injury, dealing with a nagging pain, or just trying to improve your overall fitness and health!
-
πŸ’― So the next time someone tries to compare your body to a car in a way that makes you feel like a piece of equipment that is breaking down and needs to be "fixed", remember that YOU CAN ADAPT and are A LOT MORE RESILIENT than you've been led to believe!
