The Indian Institute of Diabetes (IID) was established in 2001 based on the memorandum of understanding between government of Kerala and World India Diabetes Foundation, USA. WIDF is promoted by eminent physicians in the USA. Over the years the Indian Institute of Diabetes has become a major institution in diabetes care in Kerala and the institute is the state nodal centre for the National Programmed for the Prevention and Control of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The Kerala Heart foundation has recently been amalgamated into the IID.

This autonomous institution runs on generous grant from the Government of Kerala. Directed by former Director of medical education and assisted by internationally and nationally trained senior faculties.
