About Us – Who We Are

Great social movements in the history of mankind are the products of the powerful sentiments of an individual. Harshamitra Super Specialty Centre at Trichy is one such example. This Cancer centre had its seed from the heart of Dr.G.Govindaraj; M.Ch (Master of Chirurgery) from the death of his father due to throat cancer. It was the seed of sorrow over the death of his father.

The young couple determined to dedicate their lives in cancer research and treatment in a meaningful way. Hence after working in leading cancer centres like Madras Medical College, Government Royapettah Hospital, Government Arignar Anna Memorial Cancer Hospital, Kanchipuram and Adyar Cancer Institute, they founded “Harshamitra super speciality cancer centre and Research Institute” in Trichy on 11/12/2010. Bereaved over the death of his father due to throat Cancer, Dr.G.Govindaraj decided to quit his erstwhile roaring medical practice to pursue higher studies in Surgical Oncology. His devotion made him win the Gold Medal in M.Ch (Surgical Oncology). The grim determination of the family to fight against cancer is followed suit by his wife, Dr.Pon Sasipriya also, who took up her higher studies in Radiation Oncology. And she too proved her mettle by winning the Gold Medal in her faculty.

Keeping in mind the painful experience he had when his father was suffering with throat cancer and the lack of facilities in Trichy at that time, Dr.G.Govindaraj wanted to establish an advanced cancer treatment centre at Trichy to deliver cancer treatment on par with international standards and at affordable cost to the people of Trichy. Thus bloomed Harshamitra cancer centre in the central part of TamilNadu, Trichy.

Within a short period from its inception, Harshamitra became popular and came to be known as one of the leading centres in Trichy, all because of the dedicated and well coordinated service rendered by the medical team of the hospital.

For the first time in Trichy, Harshamitra introduced the concept of “Tumor Board” in the treatment of cancer. Every Saturday, a multi disciplinary team of doctors from all the three fields of Cancer Treatment, namely, Surgical, Radiation and Medical Oncology would sit together and discuss the treatment plan of each and every patient in the presence of the patient and the attendant and then begin to deliver the multimodal treatment as per the plan. This multimodal approach is the standard treatment followed in international cancer centres. And it was first introduced in Trichy by Harshamitra cancer centre only.

Apart from cancer treatment, this hospital is unique in taking care of the other aspects of comprehensive cancer care like cancer prevention, Cancer palliation, Terminal care, Nurses Training Institute and cancer research.

In consonance with the noble aim cherished by the Founders of Harshamitra and also by the like-minded friends and relatives, this hospital has formed a charitable trust in the name of “Rose Garden” to deliver free treatment to poor cancer patients, to conduct cancer awareness campaigns, free cancer detection camps and to establish hospice free for the terminally ill cancer patients.

Every month about 200 women of neighbouring villages are given breast and uterus screening tests absolutely free of cost, which would be around Rs.1500 per head. The dedicated service of the doctor couple and this hospital has been appreciated by the honourable Health minister of Tamil Nadu and they have been honoured with a certificate of appreciation.

The aim of Harshamitra cancer centre is to make the latest modern developments in cancer treatment available to the people of Trichy at affordable cost and deliver personalized cancer treatment with dedication and empathy. The trust and the faith that the people have reposed on this hospital is the key driving force for the medical team at Harshamitra and every single soul associated with Harshamitra will never let down the confidence and will always keep up the flag of Positive Approach above all!
