What to ask your doctor when you experience eyestrain:

◽Screen ergonomics, posture while using devices or TV

◽Sleep duration and time of sleep
◽Ambient lighting

Symptoms to watch out for in diabetic retinopathy or ocular symptoms in diabetes

Blurry vision: is one of the first signs of diabetes. High sugar levels can end up damaging the tiny blood vessels of the eyes and affecting the retina by macular edema, hemorrhages or increased eye pressure (glaucoma). Cataract due to diabetes can also cause blurred vision.

Floaters: Spontaneous bleeding in the eyes as a result of diabetic retinopathy can cause the appearance of spots of floaters. High sugar levels cause the blood vessels to leak fluids into the lens, making it seem like there are floating spots in front of your eyes.

Double vision: this may not indicate retinopathy but can occur due to diabetic cataract formation, or involvement of one of the cranial nerves connecting the eye to the brain which serve eye movement. In the case of the latter, a neurologist or neurosurgeon should be seen at the earliest.

Spots: Diabetes literally makes you see spots in front of your eyes. This could be caused by the capillaries bleeding into vitreous humour of the eyes. These may enlarge into bigger blind spots with continuous bleeding.

Flashes and lights: Diabetics report seeing flashes or lightning streaks in their field of vision, which interferes with day-to-day activities, caused by abnormal blood vessels pulling against the retina, which needs early intervention.

Blurred vision in the corners of the eyes: Apart from causing blurred vision, diabetic retinopathy also affects peripheral vision.

Blind spots: People suffering from diabetic retinopathy sometimes notice a pigmented spot in their field of vision. It could be due to macular degeneration or a hemorrhage inside the eye

Eye pain: due to eye pressure/glaucoma which is common in diabetics. This requires immediate treatment to prevent loss of vision.
