Dear friends, this to sensitise you to why doctors are protesting in DMS campus in Chennai..
50% service quota for in service doctors was cancelled last month in a court verdict and TN Gov't was asked to follow MCI norms(10 20 30% rule) for PG admission..
So what is the impact of removing this quota?
Let me give you some background info.. Tamil Nadu is in the top among the states in India in health sector.. This is due to our efficient primary health care.. Our primary health care is efficient because of the incentive programme started by our TN Gov't to give 50% of TN pg seats to In service doctors, which encourages doctors to join Gov't service.. Another plus point is that, a bond is signed by those doctors doing PG through this quota that they will work in Gov't service till retirement.. This adds specialists to Gov't hospitals which further strengthens our health system..
Another reality check.. There are plans to introduce bridge courses (1 year course to let them practise modern medicine) for AYUSH doctors, pharmacists, staff nurses and BSc (Community health) course (3 year course; Village doctors)..
Coming to our problem,
When this quota is lost, there will be insufficient doctors in PHCs and insufficient specialists in Gov't hospitals.. PHCs may be filled by the bridge course trained people.. This will degrade our health system.. Patients will be forced to go to corporate hospitals which not all can afford.. Unemployed doctors will provide surplus labour to the corporates, who will be exploited in corporate hospitals for less pay.. So this will support corporates and privatisation.. Also, PHCs are being privatised in other states..
We have already lost all our DM/MCh seats to All India quota (yes, no TN quota in super speciality).. Now they are stopping Service quota.. This is a chain reaction.. So friends, we must be united and fight to preserve, the health of TN people, and our own identity as MBBS doctors.. This is not a problem only for in service doctors, but for every doctor, and in a longer run, the common man..
