Iron Dextran is a sterile, injectable solution containing a complex of ferric hydroxide and a low-molecular-weight dextran polymer. It is used to rapidly treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia in livestock.

Piglets are born with very low iron reserves (approx. 50 mg). Sow's milk is naturally low in iron, providing only about 1 mg per day. However, a rapidly growing piglet requires about 7 mg of iron daily. Without supplementation, the majority of piglets will become anemic within days, leading to:

Poor growth and reduced weaning weights.

Paleness of the skin and mucous membranes.

Lethargy and respiratory distress, sometimes called "thumps."

Increased susceptibility to scours (diarrhea) and other infections.
