Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of the usual two copies, there are three—this is why it is also called Trisomy 21.
Common Characteristics
Physical features may include:
• Flat facial profile
• Almond-shaped eyes that slant upward
• Small ears and short neck
• Single crease across the palm
• Shorter height
Developmental aspects:
• Slower learning pace
• Delay in speech and communication
• Delay in motor skills (sitting, walking, coordination)
