Hindustan Times: Beyond the Hunt - The Man-eater of Udaipur.

Conservation comes with difficult choices. To kill a maneater is conservation to its core.

On a balmy evening in the Aravalli hills, Suraj, a five-year-old girl, stood washing her hands and feet in a drain. Suddenly, her pitiful screams caught the attention of a few kids. Elders from the Bhil settlement of Kadua began their search and found her severed palm in the hilly forest, and her mutilated body further on.

In another hut, “Cheetah! Cheetah!” the daughter of a woman who was killed by the same leopard keeps repeating. Ten people, including a temple priest five women and a child, have been the victims of the maneater of Gogunda, Udaipur. The tale unfolded with a terror that is ancient as it is visceral.

UdaipurTimes: Falling Hare Population by Raza Tehsin

"Hares were found in aplenty in the Indian jungles, but their numbers have reduced drastically, which is indicative of the ailing state of our forests. In the open forests and fields around
Udaipur alone, other than the wildlife sanctuaries, the hare population is estimated to have dropped by a staggering 80%."

First published in Souvenir, the publication of Udaipur Forest Department's Bird Fair journal, 2019.

Surprised and moved to see this heartwarming review in Pippa Rann Books, UK, by a Pakistani writer based in London.

"Tehsin’s writing reminds me of ‘The God of Small Things’ by Arundhati Roy...in its handling of caste politics, sexual exploitation and belief in the occult and supernatural...

The sensory detail conjured up (for there is no other phrase to describe this literary sorcery) by Arefa Tehsin when describing the architecture, food, scenery and the animals native to the landscape hooked me, as a native Sindhi from Pakistan, right from the start. I am fascinated by the similarities across the border and recognise so much of my land in Tehsin’s narrative.

So clever and lyrical is her prose...Tehsin seeks to both delight and disturb the reader. References to ‘til-ke-ladoos and cactus-milk’, if I come across them again (doubtful), will always remind me of this book."

A genre-bending portrayal of family dynamics, societal wealth distribution and caste politics in postcolonial India. It is 1950 and Mewar is reeling from the aftereffects of Partition and the departure of the British. On the day of Makar Sankranti, teenaged beauty Sanaz, the esteemed Dada Bhai’s d...

Zoos play a vital role in conservation, education and are one of the last remaining urban links to the wild. As I explore their importance and the ethical dilemmas.

The Sunday Times: Preserving Wonder

"The Homo sapien—the thinking man—in his great walk towards ‘progress’, invents new philosophies to cover his guilt of ruthlessly destroying nature (donate a dollar with every doughnut for saving dogs). If insects’ blood was red, says Dr. Tehsin, our roads would be bloody every day. We sit on a mahogany chair (a dead tree), sip on a glass of wine (from vineyards made by clearing wilderness), remove our leather shoes (animal skin), cast a glance around our air-conditioned (greenhouse gas) room (built on countless insects and small creatures buried alive with cement), pet our pet, and sigh about zoos, those cruel places that encage animals.

I tend to agree with what Edward Ebby, who strongly advocated for environmental issues, said, “I am a humanist. I’d rather kill a man than a snake.” And I tend to agree that zoos are vital for conservation in the world we live in. If we truly care about wild animals, let’s start with re-connecting their age-old migration corridors, which they have lost due to us, making the parks they live in no different than large zoos. Perhaps that would be a worthy start towards our fight against cruelty."

By Arefa Tehsin It was a sweltering afternoon. We were surrounded by the chatter of excited children, each clutching an ice cream cone as they marvelled at the baby orangutang, lion cubs, and a baby sloth bear. The zoo’s vitality was palpable, evidenced by the successful breeding of these animals ...
