LATEST ➡️ Physical inactivity is the most important unhealthy lifestyle factor for pain severity in older adults with pain❗️
⠀
📋 A recent study by Nunez-Cortes et al. aimed to assess associations between unhealthy lifestyle variables (sleep, smoking, diet and physical inactivity) and pain severity (mild, moderate, severe) in >27,500 older adults (mean age: 73 years, 63% female) with pain, adjusted for age, s*x, geographic region, education, history of chronic disease and mutually adjusted for each lifestyle.
⠀
RESULTS
The following lifestyle factors were all associated with severe pain:
1️⃣ Physical inactivity (OR: 4.35; 95% CI: 3.85 to 4.92)
2️⃣ Sleep problems (OR: 1.83; 95% CI: 1.69 to 1.99)
3️⃣ Smoking (OR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.34)
4️⃣ Inadequate diet (OR: 1.78: 95% CI: 1.22 to 2.61)
⠀
CONCLUSIONS
➡️ Physically inactive older adults were significantly more likely to experience severe pain, while other lifestyle factors (sleep problems, smoking, inadequate diet) were also associated with severe pain, but to a lesser extent.
➡️ The majority of the above lifestyle factors are MODIFIABLE. As a result, working to address these lifestyle factors should be a priority in older adults with pain.
➡️ Given the cross-sectional design, the bidirectionality of these relationships should be considered.
