NEUROPATHY: The nervous system consists of both Central and Peripheral nervous system. The brain and spinal cord constitute the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system sends information from the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of the body. The peripheral nerves also send sensory information to the central nervous system.
Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that occurs due to disease or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves.
CAUSES:
Peripheral neuropathy can result from multiple causes.
-Traumatic injuries,
-Infections,
-Metabolic problems(One of the most common causes is diabetes)
-Deficiency/nutritional
-Inherited causes and
-Exposure to toxins. (Both alcohol and to***co aggravate nerve pain and can cause nerve damage when used for long periods.)
SYMPTOMS and SIGNS:
Many different types of peripheral neuropathy exist. Each type has unique symptoms and signs. They are further classified by the type of nerve damage involved. They can have pure sensory, motor or autonomic complaints. Many people have a combination of all three types of nerve fibre involvement.

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:
• tingling sensation in the hands or feet
• a glove and stocking sensation
• sharp, stabbing pains
• numbness in the hands or feet
• heaviness in the arms and legs
• weakness in hands or dropping things from hands
• atrophy or thinning of limbs
• a postural drop in blood pressure
• sexual dysfunction, especially in men
• constipation or diarrhoea
• excessive sweating
DIAGNOSIS:
Tests are usually advised based on the neurological findings of the patient. The routine blood investigations are advised along with the electrophysiological tests like nerve conduction studies. If required, imaging with CT/MRI may be done.
TREATMENT:
Treatment is given for the underlying cause and symptomatic treatment is also given. Multiple medications are available that can be prescribed only after a detailed examination of patients.
Other practices that provide relief for peripheral neuropathy :
• chiropractic care
• acupuncture
• massage
• meditation
• yoga
Moderate, regular exercise can also help lessen discomfort.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common cause of neuropathy. Patients should incorporate foods high in B12 into their diets.
