🌿 Weekly Ayurveda continues with insights into the foundations of holistic health.

This week, Dr. Aparna Shanbag, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Kriya Sharira, MIAMS, Manipal, beautifully enlightens us on the fundamental principle of Ayurveda — the Tridosha: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. ✨

These three bio-energies govern all physiological and psychological functions of the body. Understanding their balance helps us recognize our unique constitution, maintain health, and prevent imbalances before they manifest as disease.

🌾 Happy Makar Sankranti! ✨

As the Sun begins its journey northward — marking the harvest season and a shift in nature’s rhythm — we celebrate with foods that are both festive and nourishing. Traditionally across India — from ellu‑bella (sesame & jaggery mix) in Karnataka to Pongal and khichdi — festive foods are rich in warm, nutrient‑dense ingredients like sesame, jaggery, rice, and seasonal vegetables. 🍚🍯 These foods not only honour the harvest and Sun God but also support digestion, generate internal heat, and balance doshas during the chilly season.

Did you know ?
Sushruta, the ancient Indian "Father of Surgery," described over 120 surgical instruments, classified as Yantras (blunt) and Shastras (sharp), including specialized scalpels, forceps, probes, and endoscopes, many with animal-inspired designs for precise tasks like rhinoplasty and fracture repair, emphasizing cleanliness, sharpness, and sterilization.
Key instruments included scalpels (Vrddhi Patra), forceps (Svastika), probes (Shalaka), and suturing needles, forming a sophisticated system far ahead of its time.

❄️ From mid-January to mid-March, Shishir Ritu marks the peak of winter, when dryness increases and Vata and Kapha tend to accumulate. Ayurveda considers this a powerful time to build strength, stamina, and immunity. Nourish the body with warming, alkaline foods like amla, ginger, garlic, grains, milk products, and seasonal cereals while avoiding excessive dryness and heat-producing foods. Daily Abhyanga (oil massage) is especially beneficial now — deeply nourishing the skin, improving circulation, and protecting the body from seasonal dehydration. 🌿✨
