Now in India Physiotherapy is a regulated profession under the regulatory body namely NCAHP (Government of India), now physiotherapy has a uniform curriculum, standard is to be followed by all states in India.
➡️Basic information about the entry to the Physiotherapy(BPT)field:
1. 10+2 with PCB and English (minimum 50%} is required.
2. Clearance of NEET exam (2026 onwards)
3. Minimum age is 18 years
5. To be a Registered Physiotherapist, minimum qualification is a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) degree, it is now 5 (4+1) years duration (earlier it was 4 yrs & 6 months).
5. BPT includes 4 years of course work and 1 year of compulsory rotary internship.
6. No lateral entry is available.
➡️You must not choose:
❌ BPT in distance mode (though as per UGC mandate, after 2010 no University can run physiotherapy in distance mode)
❌ BPT as private candidate (few Universities of North East India are doing, these are not valid)
❌ BPT as Non-attending candidate (few Universities of North India are offering but these are also not valid)
❌ B.Voc Physiotherapy (it is controversial, avoid it)
❌ Diploma in Physiotherapy Technology from MAKAUT (invalid course, there is no such terminology called 'Physiotherapy Technology' it is just the profit making by the institute)
❌ Diploma in Physiotherapy Techniques from Kalyani University (invalid course after NCAHP)
❌ Diploma in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy from Bharat Sevak Samaj (invalid course after NCAHP)
❌ Diploma in Physiotherapy and Activity Therapy from Bharat Sevak Samaj (invalid course after NCAHP)
❌ Diploma in Physiotherapy from any institute (as no provision of registration in the NCAHP as Physiotherapist)
❌ Any Physiotherapy course from arts/commerce background are not recognized.
➡️ You can choose:
✅ BPT course from Health Sciences University of any state. (State University)
✅ BPT from Private University of any state registered under Physiotherapy Council(on campus).
✅ The institute with Hospital/Clinic attached.
✅ The institute is following NCAHP rules.
✅ After BPT, Higher education like MPT, PhD PT, Post Doctoral fellowship etc.
➡️"Dr" Prefix:
The NCAHP's recent announcement allows physiotherapists to use the "Dr" prefix and "PT" suffix, acknowledging their professional status and expertise.
➡️Roles and Responsibilities of Physiotherapists:
Physiotherapists assess patients, develop treatment plans, provide hands-on therapy, and educate patients on injury prevention and exercises.
➡️Work Environments:
Physiotherapists can work in hospitals, private clinics, rehabilitation centers, sports facilities, nursing homes, assistant professor and even start their own practices.
➡️Specializations:
Physiotherapy (MPT) has specialized options in Sports, Neuro, Ortho, Cardio-pulmonary, Oncology, Pediatrics, Geriatric Care, Community Rehabilitation, Women Health or other areas.
➡️Career Growth:
Physiotherapists can advance to senior positions, head of department roles, or director positions. (As per NCAHP classification)
➡️Demand:
The demand for physiotherapists is growing due to an increase in chronic conditions and musculoskeletal disorders.
