DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is crucial for the development of the brain and eyes in the fetus. Here are some DHA-rich foods that can support fetal brain development:
1. Fatty fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, herring, trout. These fish are low in mercury and high in DHA.
2. Algal Oil : Algal oil supplements are a plant-based source of DHA, suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
3. Fortified Foods : DHA-fortified eggs, milk, yogurt, orange juice, and cereals. Check labels for DHA content.
4. Seaweed : Nori, wakame, kelp : Some types of seaweed contain DHA, though the content can vary.
5. Chia Seeds and Flaxseeds : While these seeds are high in ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a precursor to DHA, the body can convert some ALA to DHA, though the conversion rate is limited.
6. Walnuts : Like chia and flaxseeds, walnuts are a good source of ALA, which can be partially converted to DHA.
7. Canola Oil : Another plant-based source of ALA that can be converted to DHA.
