I know how much your heart longs to hear your child call you Muma or Papa—to hear those precious words that feel like a doorway to connection. And I know how deeply it hurts when they don’t come. It’s okay to feel this grief. It’s real and valid.
But I also want you to know this: your child IS communicating—in ways that may not sound like words but are still telling you how much they need you, want you, and depend on you for their survival.
The way they search for you when they’re unsure, reach out when they’re overwhelmed, or stay close when they feel safe—these are their ways of saying, “YOU ARE MY SAFE PLACE.”
Communication is so much more than spoken words. It’s in how they:
• Smile at you when they wake up → saying, “I’M HAPPY YOU’RE HERE.”
• Check your face when they hear a loud noise → asking, “IS IT SAFE? ARE YOU CALM?”
• Bring you their favorite toy → connecting, “I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU.”
• Pull you by the hand → calling you, “COME WITH ME, I WANT YOU THERE.”
• Look at you when they try something new or scary → seeking reassurance, “ARE YOU WATCHING OVER ME?”
• Lean on you or stay close when tired or unwell → expressing, “I FEEL SAFE WITH YOU.”
I know it’s hard not to measure progress by speech alone. We are so used to seeing VERBAL LANGUAGE as the ultimate goal, but for many children, COMMUNICATION THROUGH ACTIONS, GESTURES, AND EYE GAZE is just as meaningful.
When we learn to look beyond the words, we start to SEE THE MESSAGES they are already sharing with us every day.
Your child may not be speaking in words yet, but their message is there—WAITING FOR YOU TO HEAR IT, SEE IT, AND VALIDATE IT. ❤️
