Mysticism and Yoga 🧘💕

When the aesthetic sense, based on the subtle aesthetic science, comes to touch a certain standard, it is what is called mysticism. And when this mysticism reaches the pinnacle of human glory, or the excellence of human glory, it is called spirituality. What is mysticism? Mysticism is the never-ending endeavour to find out the link between the finite and the infinite. It is a never-ending endeavour to find out a link between the self and the Super-Self, khud and Khudá. This is mysticism.

It is one of the human wonts that human beings are never satisfied with something finite. They are never satisfied with something limited. In Sanskrit it is said, Nalpe sukhamasti bhunaeva sukhamasti [“Human thirst cannot be satisfied with something limited, human hunger cannot be satisfied by something finite”].

That is, in the quest for the Infinite, human beings first come in contact with aesthetic science. Aesthetic science does not always mean to get something pleasant; it may mean to get something troublesome, something embarrassing – it may or may not be something pleasant. Aesthetic science is that which one can express in a subtler way, from subtle to subtle, and when it reaches the subtlest point, that point is the pinnacle of human glory.

Now, it is the duty of artists to express their work in a nice way, in a lucid way, and place it before the world. Not everyone can do this. But enjoying something with aesthetic taste or aesthetic charm is within the capacity of each and every human being.

When human beings started their movement towards the Supreme Being, in quest of Supreme Bliss, they first came in contact with spirituality. As spirituality is coming in contact with the Infinite, that is, the finite comes in contact with the Infinite, it is called yoga. Yoga is the unit moving in quest of the Infinite, the finite moving towards the Infinite in a mystic style. In Sanskrit, yoga means “addition”. For instance, two plus two is equal to four.

But for a mystic, for an aspirant of the mystic goal or the mystic desideratum, yoga is not only addition; here yoga means “unification”. What sort of unification? It is just like sugar and water. Say there are two plus two apples. In the case of addition there will be one apple, then two, then three and then four apples. Every apple will maintain its individuality or its identity. The identity of the apples remains unchanged before and after the addition. But in the case of unification, that is, in the example of sugar and water, the sugar does not maintain its identity because it becomes one with the water. This is unification. In the realm of mysticism, yoga means this type of unification. That is, it is unification like sugar and water, and not simply addition like two plus two.

Now the starting point is aesthetic taste or aesthetic science. The culminating point, that is, from the culminating point, starts the movement of Supreme charm. In that movement with the goal of Supreme charm, human beings become unified with the Supreme Entity, whose seat is above the pinnacle of existence.

This movement for yoga, for the unification of the unit with the Supreme, the finite with the Infinite, is a must for each and every human being. The human physical and psychic structure is most suitable for this purpose. Animals and plants act according to their inborn instincts. They are mentally undeveloped, and because of this their brain is also undeveloped. The cranium is very small and the conscious portion of the mind is sufficient for them; there is no necessity or little necessity for the sub-conscious or unconscious strata of the mind.

A plant gets pleasure or pain when its inborn instincts are either encouraged or discouraged. When the inborn instincts of a plant or an animal are encouraged it gets pleasure, and when the inborn instincts are discouraged, suppressed or depressed, it gets pain. This is how the brain or the mind of plants and animals functions. But in the case of human psychology, human psycho-spiritual movement cannot be suppressed, cannot be checked. There lies the speciality of human existence.

Now yoga. Yoga is the most developed and most valuable expression of human wonts, so it is in the first phase of yoga that one expresses oneself through so many arts and sciences. The final point of all artistic movement and the final point of all branches of sciences is the supreme source, the perennial source of all energies, the supreme seat of all energies. It is Parama Puruśa, the Supreme Entity, who is the Father of all, the Causal Matrix of all created beings in this universe, both animate and inanimate. That is why for all people, whether they are intelligent or illiterate, thin or fat, educated or uneducated, the Supreme Entity must be the goal of life. That is, the Supreme Entity is the culminating point, the desideratum of all human expressions. When human beings are lacking in this spirit of movement, they degrade themselves from the human status. All you boys and girls, you should remember this supreme expression of veracity.

Bhaktirbhagavato sevá bhaktih premasvarúpińii,

Bhaktiránandarúpá ca bhaktih bhaktasya jiivanam.

What is meant by “bhakti”? The word “bhakti” has been derived from the root verb “bhaj” by adding the suffix “ktin”. “Bhaj” means “to call with devotion”; that is to call the Lord with utmost devotion, taking Him to be everything of one’s life, is bhakti. In other words, bhakti is to move towards Him after withdrawing all the expressions of one’s mind.

Now what is shástra? Shásanát tárayet yastu sa shástra parikiirtitah. That which governs or disciplines for liberation or all-round salvation is shástra. In the case where the parents govern their children only for the sake of governing, when the children grow up and realize this they begin to disobey them. But where the discipline and control is aimed at salvation or liberation, that discipline is the discipline of shastra.

Supreme Bliss 💕

Merge the propensities expressed by your indriyas into citta (mind stuff), citta into ahamtattva (doer I), ahamtattva into mahattattva (existential-I feeling), mahattattva into jiiva'tma' (unit consciousness) and jiiva'tma' into Parama'tma' (Universal Consciousness). That will be your Supreme fulfillment, the state beyond which there remains nothing to be attained.

Tiirthas are within self.💕

🧘

You have not to go to the caves of the Himalayas and to so many tiirthas [places of pilgrimage] in search of your own inner spirit. It lies covert within yourself. Your heart is the best tiirtha. It is the supreme tiirtha.

Lord Shiva said:

Idaḿ tiirtham idaḿ tiirthaḿ bhramanti támasáh janáh; Átmatiirthaḿ na jánanti kathaḿ mokśa varánane.

[Here is one place of pilgrimage, there is another place. People of static nature wander from the one place to the other place. But without finding the real place of pilgrimage within themselves, how can they attain salvation?] “Oh, Párvatii! People, spiritual aspirants, move in search of God in so many tiirthas, but they do not know the self-tiirtha where the Lord lies covert.” So Dharmasya tattvaḿ nihitaḿ guháyám – “The essence of dharma lies covert in your ‘I’ feeling within yourself.”

"The only way, the only approach, is complete surrender. 'O Supreme Entity, You may be great, You may be the Nucleus of the entire world, You may be infinite, and I may be finite; You may be Great, I may be small; You may be everything, and I may be nothing: but this much You cannot ignore. You cannot deny; You cannot deny that I am the son and that You are the Father. So I have a birthright to sit on Your lap. You cannot deny it.' So each and every entity has the right to move towards Him, and to be one with Him.”

Puruśottama is the nucleus of this Cosmological system. In the atomic system, there is a nucleus, and so many electrons are moving around the nucleus. Similarly, in our global system, the earth is the nucleus, and the moon is moving round the earth; in the solar system, the sun is the nucleus, and so many planets are moving round it. In the Cosmological system, Puruśottama is the nucleus, and so many objects are moving round It, so many solar systems are moving round that Nucleus.

Lord Shiva 💕

Is Shiva a philosophy or a personality or a deity? We must first say a little about Shivatattva [the inner meaning of Shiva], devatátattva and daevii shakti, and then analyse Shiva and the other gods and goddesses who are claimed to be related to Him. There are deep-seated questions in human minds about this, but all the questions remain unanswered.

Shiva was a great personality. At the same time, His entire life – we may say, His very way of life – is a philosophy. And when one’s personality becomes fully identified with one’s philosophy of life, one becomes a god.

Dyotate krid́ate yasmát udyate dyotate divi;
Tasmát deva iti proktah stúyate sarvadevataeh.

[The vibrational manifestations emanating from the Supreme
Nucleus are known as devatás, and these devatás address that
Supreme Nucleus as Deva.
He with His powers vibrates the entire universe, makes the entire
universe dance; and He by dint of His occult and supra-occult
powers brings everything back onto His lap.]

The endless expressions of life emanating from the Universal Nucleus which move all-pervasively in and through everything of the universe and influence all entities are called devatás [deities, gods and goddesses]. Shiva’s ideology is totally identified with His life, with His way of life.

Hence, Shiva is definitely a devatá.
Now while we are discussing devatátattva [the inner meaning of a devatá] we must add something more. Normally, each and every expression that emanates from the Supreme Hub, the Cosmic Nucleus, is a devatá. In that sense, Shiva is not merely one such devatá; He is the aggregate of these devatás. Shiva is no doubt a god, but the word “god” does not encompass the totality of His personality. He is not only a god, He is the God of gods – Devatánáḿ devatá, devanáḿ devah ityarthe Mahádevah [“The God of all gods and goddesses is Mahádeva”]. Shiva is Mahádeva.

Shiva & Shakti 💕

Brahma [Cosmic Entity] is the composite of Shiva [Consciousness] and Shakti [Operative Principle].

A piece of paper has two sides. Although they are two for the sake of argument, they cannot be separated from the one paper entity. Removal of one side of the paper jeopardizes the existence of the other. So is the relation of Puruśa [Consciousness] and Prakrti [Operative Principle] in the Cosmic Entity. None of them can stand without the other. That is why it is said that they are an inalienable concomitance.

Although as a philosophical word, shiva or puruśa is extensively used, in common parlance the word átmá [“soul” or “self”] is more extensively used in the same sense. Shiva means “witnessing consciousness”. So does puruśa – Pure shete yah sah puruśah, that is, “The witness-ship that lies quiescent in every entity is the puruśa.” And átman means “that which is omni-telepathic”.

The physical sense of the body is telepathized on the mental plate. In other words, the physical sense is awakened in the mental plate due to the reflection that follows the impact of the crude physical waves on the mental plate. Similarly, the sense of every crude object is awakened in the mental plate as soon as the reflection takes place following the impact of the waves of the objects on the mental plate.

Identical mental waves hit the soul entity, causing the reflection of those mental waves, and this awakens in the unit a sense of its indivisibility from the soul. If, in the language of philosophy, mental waves, that is, thought, be called thought-waves, then the reflection of the mental waves on the soul-plate will have to be termed telepathic waves. And so in reference to the soul-plate, we may say that it is telepathic to the mind.

All mundane objects, crude, subtle or causal, consist in mental waves or thought-waves, and so in the fullest accord with reasoning and logic, we may call the Soul omni-telepathic. It is because of this omni-telepathic Átman that the existences of all mundane objects, visible or invisible, large or small, find their factual substantiation and recognition. Had there been no Átman, the existence of everything would have been in jeopardy.

01/04/2024

In this manifested universe there are animate beings and inanimate things. There is a dharma for all creatures. Jaeva dharma [the dharma of living beings] is for all creatures. But man’s dharma is Bhágavata dharma. And Bhágavata dharma implies vistára (psychic expansion), rasa (devotion) and sevá (service.) Follow your svadharma [humans’ “own dharma”], which is Bhágavata [divine] dharma.

People love God knowingly or unknowingly. Everyone has an inclination towards spirituality. Hindu Dharma, Muslim Dharma, or Christian Dharma is not the svadharma of man. The svadharma of man is Bhágavata dharma. The sentient, mutative and static forces do not remain in Bhágavata dharma, which is beyond the guńas [sentient, mutative and static forces].

These three guńas are like three thieves who lived in a jungle. They once met a gentleman who had lost his way and strayed into the jungle. One thief bound up this gentleman. “Who are you?” asked the gentleman. “I am tamoguńa,” replied the thief.

The second man accosted the gentleman and found him writhing in pain. He untied his bonds. The gentleman asked him who he was. He said he was rajoguńa. The third thief [sattvaguńa] met the gentleman and was moved by his plight. “If you go in that direction, you will reach the city, the city of light, of Bhágavata dharma. We are thieves and cannot go to the city of light, of Bhágavata dharma.”

Follow your svadharma. Even if it is difficult to follow your svadharma and easy to follow paradharma [dharma of other beings], you must not leave your svadharma, Bhágavata dharma. Those who follow paradharma move towards crudity. If you wish to save yourself from sorrow, follow Bhágavata dharma.

Shiva's Ta***ic Sadhana 💕

🧘

Párvatii asked Shiva, “What is the minimum requirement in order to become a sádhaka?” Shiva replied, “Sukrataer mánavo bhútvá jiṋánii cenmokśamápnuyát.” When living beings attain a human form as a result of their actions, then they become competent to do sádhaná.

The next question posed by Párvatii was, “What qualifications such as age, academic qualifications, character, etc., should a human being have in order to do sádhaná?”

Regarding age, it might be appropriate to say that there are basically four stages in human life. In the first stage, the primary duty of the human being is to receive knowledge and do dharma sádhaná. In the second stage, one must fulfil worldly duties and perform dharma sádhaná. In the third stage, one must see to any remaining family responsibilities and perform dharma sádhaná. Finally, in the fourth stage, when the human body has become incapable of performing worldly duties, one must do dharma sádhaná alone. So there are no barriers of age as far as the requirements for sádhaka are concerned.

There is an old story about this. Once a child named Dhruva started doing sádhaná and singing bhajanas at the early age of five. This scared the eminent rśis and munis. They thought that this young boy would surpass them in spiritual excellence. So, as devotees, they all implored Náráyańa to save them from being defeated and humiliated. Náráyańa sent Nárada to resolve the issue. Nárada means “one who spreads devotion”. So Nárada came to the boy Dhruva and tried to allure him with toys, sweets, a kingdom, and things of that sort. He inquired why the boy was so enthusiastic about sádhaná and bhajanas at such an early age, especially when he had a whole lifetime at his disposal for spiritual pursuits. Dhruva replied,

“Kaomára ácaret prájiṋah dharmán bhágavatániha,
Durlabhaḿ mánuśaḿ janma tadapyadhruvamarthadam.”

“O Nárada! You are a sage, you know much more than I do. Yet I wish to mention, in order to clarify things, that we get a human form after numerous animal lives.”

“Sukrtaer mánavo bhútvá.” This human life is attained through the medium of lots of clash and cohesion. Of all creatures’ existence, this human existence is the most rare. But even rarer is the human body that has been perfected through sádhaná.

Shravańáyápi bahubhiryo na labhyah
Shrńvanto’pi bahabo yaḿ na viduh,
Áshcarya vaktá kushalo’sya labdhá
Áshcarya jiṋáta kushalánushiśt́ah.

Even after getting human life, only a few get the opportunity to listen to dharmika discourses. Among those, only a few develop the desire to practise dharma sádhaná. And even among these, only a few actually grasp the spirit of Sádhaná. Those rare ones who understand, perform sádhaná, and reach the goal are truly blessed. In the effort to perfect oneself, even if one faces obstacles and hindrances from one’s elders and near ones, one must ignore them. This is not a sin, not a crime.

Dhruva further said, “Nárada, who knows what will happen tomorrow? You have become old and you got the opportunity to do sádhaná and sing bhajanas at this age. But in my life, the sun may or may not rise tomorrow. Suppose I die tonight? So how can I wait till old age?” Then Nárada went away silently. “Dharmán Bhágavatániha,” said Dhruva. All men should try to become established in Bhágavata Dharma in childhood. Then one is likely to have a lot more time at one’s disposal.

What is Bhágavata Dharma and what are the qualifications for it? The one qualification is prapatti, that is, “I have surrendered everything unto Bhagaván. Whatever He wants I will do.” Those who get established in this feeling at an early age are true human beings. What is Bhágavata Dharma? It is vistára (psychic expansion), rasa (flow) and sevá (service). Bhágavata Dharma differentiates humans from animals. There are some attributes which exist in trees, animals and humans alike, and there are other attributes which exist in animals and humans only. Furthermore, there are certain attributes which are unique to human beings.

Some people say, “The human being is a rational animal.” I refute this statement. In my opinion, the human being is not an animal. The human is a rational being. Human existence is an ideological flow. Therefore, the human being is not an animal. Just as plants and animals are both living things but are not alike, similarly, animals and humans are both living beings but are not alike.

Animals move but plants do not. Animals cry but plants do not. What, then, differentiates humans from animals? Vistára, rasa and sevá. These are the three essentialities of Bhágavata Dharma, and it is Bhágavata Dharma that differentiates human beings from other creatures.

Everybody wants expansion. The desire for expansion is the innate characteristic, the dharma, of human beings. No one desires to remain kśudra – a tiny thing. All wish to expand their psychic arena. In order to quench this thirst for vistára, one must do sádhaná regularly. In this way a day is sure to come when one’s mind will become one with the Cosmic Mind.

The second factor is rasa, and third is sevá. Since time immemorial there has been a never-ending flow of Cosmic cognition. Human beings want their desires to coincide with His will. When one is able to achieve this, the life of the unit becomes successful and complete. This is rasa. Human life is blessed. In the Shástras such people are called “áptakáma”. This desire to become one with Parama Puruśa exists only in human beings, not in other living beings; neither in animals nor in plants and trees.

The third essential factor of Bhágavata Dharma is sevá. Only humans are aware of their own identity. Plants, animals and material objects are not aware. A rupee does not know that it is a rupee. A mango tree does not know that it is a mango tree. A jackal does not know that it is a jackal. But humans know that they are human.

Human beings also know that Parama Puruśa is their source of impetus, is their Father, and that they are all His children. As His children, they have a brotherly relationship with all other jiivas, or unit beings. Due to this knowledge of brotherhood, the human is superior to all other beings. Parents are greatly pleased when they find that their children have been loved and helped by someone. Similarly, Parama Puruśa will be pleased when you serve His creation – not only human beings, but also plants, animals, and the rest of creation. That is, bhúta yajiṋa, pitr yajiṋa and nr yajiṋa are to be performed. Those who have this feeling are in the real sense of the term human beings. Just having the body of a human does not make a person a real human being, a rational being. Those in whom this feeling has arisen will be called followers of Bhágavata Dharma. They are doing the sádhaná of Bhágavata Dharma. So,

“Kaomára ácaret prájiṋah dharmán Bhágavatániha,
Durlabhaḿ mánuśaḿ janma tadapyadhruvamarthadam.”

At the earliest age possible a wise person will start following Bhágavata Dharma, will start Bhágavata Dharma Sádhaná. To follow Bhágavata Dharma, the only requisite qualification is total self-surrender.

After Dhruva made his reply, what happened? Náráyańa appeared and asked the boy to get up, telling him he was very young, and asking what the necessity was of doing sádhaná at such an early age. Then Dhruva said, “The sádhaná was for You, and You have come. So now I will get up.”

You must remember the fact that, to realize Him, age, s*x, academic qualifications and such things are not relevant. Great scholars, senior people and mahámahopádhyáya pańd́itas may lag behind, while an illiterate person races ahead and fulfills his or her purpose. You should not have any inferiority complex in your mind regarding age, s*x, education, etc. You are His children. It is your birthright to reach Him, irrespective of your status, academic qualification, or age. Make proper utilization of this right.
